In-depth: Downloading fonts

MyFonts.com delivers fonts only via the Internet, either by email or direct download. We do not ship fonts on CD or other physical media. Because of this, shipping is free and instantaneous.

After you've successfully gone through the checkout process, or clicking the “view/download order” link on your My Orders page, you will be given the option to download them. Below are step-by-step instructions for downloading fonts on Windows computers using Internet Explorer. The download process for other platforms is similar/analogical.

Download

  • Fonts may be available for one of the following platforms (operating systems):
    Windows and Macintosh
You need to know which platform you will be using the fonts on. Click on the platform icon or Download link appropriate for your preferred platform to start the download.

Note: Linux and Unix users can generally use fonts designed for the Windows platform. If you use Linux or Unix, see our Linux/Unix installation instructions.

  • A File Download dialog appears. Select Save this file to disk and click OK .

  • A Save As dialog will appear. Choose a folder where you would like to save the font files, for example C :\My Documents . Click on Save. The download process will start.

    Extract

  • Macintosh fonts are downloaded as BinHex/StuffIt archives, having the HQX file extension. You will need an extraction utility like Stuffit, StuffIt Expander, DropStuff or similar to extract them. We recommend that you download the latest version of StuffIt Expander even if you already own an extraction utility! Click on and download and install the utility.

  • Windows fonts are downloaded as ZIP archives, having the ZIP file extension. You will need a Zip utility such as FreeZip, ZipItFast, PowerArchiver, WinZip, WinRar, PkZip or similar to extract them. If you don't have such tool installed on your computer, we recommend FreeZip (it’s free) or WinZip (it’s the most popular shareware Zip utility). Click on The programs are available from the links below: and download the respective tool by following the instructions given there.

  • After the download process is complete, open your Windows Explorer (Start / Programs / Windows Explorer) or your Mac Finder and go to the folder where you saved the HQX or ZIP archive, for example C:\My Documents.

  • If you have just downloaded an extraction utility (a Zip utility of your choice or StuffIt Expander), double-click on its installer file and follow the instructions given on screen to install the tool (basically, click Next, OK or Finish several times).

  • If the extraction utility is installed on your computer, you can extract your fonts. On Windows, click with the right mouse button on the ZIP archive which you have downloaded from MyFonts.com, for example 35610477.zip. Then, click Extract To C:\My Documents\35610477 (or analogically). On Macintosh, drag the HQX archive which you have downloaded from MyFonts.com, for example 35610477.HQX, onto the StuffIt Expander icon on your desktop.

  • As soon as you have successfully extracted the fonts, several subsequent folders are probably created. Go inside those folders.

    TrueType

  • If you have purchased TrueType (Win TT or Mac TT) fonts, you should see one or more TrueType. On Macintosh, they have suitcase icons with an “A” on them. On Windows, the icons are labeled with a blue “TT”.

    or

  • Double-click on any of those files. A font preview window should appear.

  • If the preview window appears, you're all set. Now you can install the fonts. You need to install the fonts in order to use them in your applications. See our Installing fonts section for reference.

    PostScript

  • If you have purchased PostScript (Win PS or Mac PS) fonts, please note the following:
    • if you use Windows 95/98/ME/NT or MacOS , you will need Adobe Type Manager (ATM) to install the fonts;
    • if you use Windows 2000 , you don't need to install ATM or any additional tools to install Win PS fonts, because Windows 2000 has built-in ATM.

  • If you don't have ATM, we recommend that you download ATM Light which is available free of charge from Adobe Systems. Click on and proceed to follow the instructions on-screen to download ATM Light. After the download is complete, run the ATM setup to install the tool. After the setup is complete, you will need to restart your computer.

  • When you have ATM installed, you should see more than one file per font.

On Windows, you should see “PostScript Outlines” (PFB) and "PostScript Metrics" (PFM) files with a red “a” icon in the folder where you extracted the ZIP archive.

    or

On Macintosh, you should see the screen font files (with a suitcase icon) and the printer font files (with an icon featuring the logo of the font vendor).

  • Double-click on any of these files. A font preview window should appear.

  • If the preview window appears, you're all set. Now you can install the fonts. You need to install the fonts in order to use them in your applications. See our Installing fonts section for reference.
