I started what is now Tried & True Supply Co. in 2011 as a self-taught graphic designer. I’d never heard of graphic design before 2010, so after I heard a friend tell me he was a graphic designer, I googled it, and was hooked. Shortly before my wife, Marcy, and I were married in 2013, I shifted the focus of my business from design to screen printing. This was a natural progression for me that came out of my desire to continue learning design-related skills and to be involved in more hands-on work. I’ve long been fascinated with “how-it’s-made” processes, so being able to make physical realities out of ideas that were translated onto a computer screen just seemed like a no-brainer to me. Much like my plunge into the world of graphic design, my interest in type design was sparked after the first time I learned what it actually was. In November 2014, I started working on my first ever typeface and font, Herschel™. After almost two years, more than 1,000 hours of perfectionistic creative destruction, and lots of patient, encouraging instruction and feedback from my good friend and type mentor, Mattox Shuler, I’m thrilled to finally introduce Herschel™ to the world. It was a labor of love and obsession, and I hope everyone who uses it will enjoy it as much as I have!
