Gottfried Pott designed Carolina in 1990 for Linotypes Type Before Gutenberg series, basing it on Carolingian minuscule handwriting from the reign of the Emperor Charlemagne. These lettershapes from about 800 A.D. were the models for the lowercase alphabet we use today.
The simple, clean lines of Carolina make it ideal for short texts, and one-line settings in larger sizes of Carolina lend informal elegance to titles and headlines.
