Types known as Old Style originated in Edinburgh in the middle of the nineteenth century. They began as an advance in the letter style known as Old Face, typified by Caslon. While they retain basic Caslon shapes, but with shorter ascenders and descenders, there is less contrast between thin and thick strokes.
As a display face, Monotype Oldstyle Bold Outline puts presence on the page without overpowering weight.
