Tambor™A font family tree displays different foundries’ versions, or a foundry’s different cuts, of basically the same typeface design.
TamborSome words from CastleType: I designed the Tambor family of typefaces because I was tired of seeing Lithos (by Carol Twombly at Adobe) on the cover of every other book or CD that I buy that pertains to anything Latin or African. Lithos is a beautiful face and is appropriate for many things. But, “Lithos” is Greek for stone, which should be a hint that maybe it is not the most appropriate face to use to convey an African or Latin mood. The Tambor family currently has four members: Adornado, Black, Inline and Light, with more to come. “Tambor” is Spanish for “drum” and has connotations relating to a type of African-derived religious ceremony (using drums, of course) as practiced under various guises in the Americas to this day. Tambor (especially the Black) has some vague similarity to Lithos (I ran it by Carol Twombley, for her comments and suggestions for distinguishg it from Lithos). There are alternates for C, S, and Y, depending on whether you want an art deco look or not. Tambor is based on my typeface Rudolf, which in turn is based on calligraphy by the wonderful type designer, Rudolf Koch. The particular calligraphy that I used as a basis for Rudolf was most likely used by Koch as a basis for his subsequent typeface Neuland. Therefore, you might see a slight resemblance between Tambor and Neuland. |
