First seen on MyFonts: December 15th, 2009 STKRHaving looked at examples of contemporary graphic design, both online and in printed publications, I began noticing a trend of using very blocky but barely legible text. This trend spread across magazines, t-shirts and in random examples of graphic design, for no apparent reason. Fast forward a few months, and I had the idea of creating my own version of this catching typeface - but with the use of lowercase letters, symbols and even accented characters. I opted for sharp, clean and consistent angles, as opposed to the use of curves and other willy-nilly additions (or subtractions). STKR was created by “sculpting” letters out of a 7x9 block, using triangles (of the same size) and rectangles to “carve” pieces out. The lowercase letters and smaller characters were carved out of 7x7 blocks, with extras bits “formed” from the pieces that were cut out. It was a lot like using a hot knife on styrofoam. This font looks very similar to Bigfoot (a blocky typeface created by Canadian Type), but was designed without any prior knowledge of the font. While there are also other fonts with a similar approach, STKR has the benefit of having a “full” set of characters - including accents, punctuation and even a few mathematical symbols. STKR got its name from the idea of “stacking” letters together to form a word, or even complex shapes, like building blocks. Try it as a headline, or as a mask for a background image or gradient. Not quite what you’re looking for? Try looking at more fonts like this. ‘STKR’ is a trademark of DM Founts. |
