In 1897, J. Stearns Cushing designed a typeface called Cushing No. 2 for American Type Founders. Frederic W. Goudy added the italic in 1904, and ATF released a variety of other loosely related faces bearing the Cushing name. International Typeface Corporation licensed the typefaces from ATF, and designer Vincent Pacella redrew the typefaces into a consistent family. ITC Cushing, released in 1982, has a fairly large x-height and linear serifs that are a revision of the original sloping serifs. It has four weights plus matching italics.

Georges Auriol designed this display typeface in 1901. It was re-released by Deberny & Peignot in 1979 with a new bold face, designed by Matthew Carter.
Auriol has a stylized stencil/brush look that reflects the Art Nouveau period. Most notable about Auriol is the unusual winged M, the large capitals, the short ascenders and descenders, and the white gaps appearing in the middle of some letter strokes. Use Auriol for display settings evocative of turn-of-the-century design and style.

Hadriano™ Hadriano™

Frederic Goudy designed Hadriano in 1918 as an all-capital titling face; it has since undergone numerous transformations. Goudy, who didn’t begin designing type until he was past 45 years old, was one of America’s most prolific type designers as well as an outspoken commentator on modern design philosophy. Goudy’s inspiration for Hadriano came from classical carved lettering that he saw in the Louvre, where he took rubbings of the letters E, P and R. He left the three letters unaltered and developed the rest of the alphabet around them.
