Biography

Opened in Chicago as the Great Western Type Foundry. It became Barnhart Brothers & Spindler in 1883, and was acquired by ATF in 1911; it closed in 1933. Three of its typefaces in particular have had a lasting impact: the world’s first grunge typeface, Fifteenth Century (released c1897 but unpopular until its rebranding as Caslon Antique around 1918); Oz Cooper’s Cooper Black, sometimes seen in bright orange, 12 feet high on the side of airliners in European skies; and Caslon Openface.
