Barnhart Brothers & Spindler

Opened in Chicago as the Great Western Type Foundry. It became Barnhart Brothers & Spindler in 1883, and was acquired by ATF in 1911; it closed in 1933. Three of its typefaces in particular have had a lasting impact: the world’s first grunge typeface, Fifteenth Century (released c1897 but unpopular until its rebranding as Caslon Antique around 1918); Oz Cooper’s Cooper Black, sometimes seen in bright orange, 12 feet high on the side of airliners in European skies; and Caslon Openface.

Bold, muscular, vaguely oriental, Wedge Gothic ML is the original name of this font released by Barnhart Bros. and Spindler of Chicago in 1893. The straight-forward, no-nonsense name tells us exactly what to expect: sans-serif letterforms based on wedge-shaped vertical strokes. The typeface was dropped for awhile -- it does not appear in the 1907 catalog for example -- but reappeared in 1925 as Japanette. What is the opposite of "straight-forward" anyway? According to McGrew, Wedge Gothic was originally created for the Chicago Herald newspaper. The designer is unknown. A distinctive display face, useful when a strong and unusual statement is desired.

This family is based on an offering in Barnhart Brothers & Spindler’s Type Specimen Catalog No. 9, issued around 1910, originally named “Grant”. It makes a handsome addition to the Whiz-Bang Woodtype series, and is available in both a Rustic and Refined version.

Named for a town in Texas, which the locals pronounce "Reh-FURRY-o".

The inspiration for this elegant, willowy typeface was found in the 1903 type specimen catalog of Barnhard Brothers & Spindler.

The original version was named “Racine”; this version takes its name from another town in Wisconsin.

This is one of the Victorian standards for job printing issued by the Barnhart Brothers and Spindler Foundry about 1891. It looks old without being decorative, a good counterpoint to fancier types in today¹s old fashioned typography.

This stylish lightface was designed by Bernd Nadall for Barnhart Bros. & Spindler as a caps-only font in 1895.

The lowercase was added at Solotype a hundred years later, resulting in a font quite at home in modern advertising.

The 1905 Barnhart Brothers & Spindler catalog featured an ultrawide face called “French Antique Extended”.

The letterforms have been faithfully rendered here, but this font’s kerning calls for a lot of overlapping and interlocking that the original cast-metal face wouldn't have been able to duplicate.

Will Ransom designed the uppercase letters in this typeface for Barnhart Brothers & Spindler in the 1920s, under the name Clearcut Shaded Caps.

The lowercase letters come from another BB&S typeface named Clearcut Italic.

An elegant headline face, best used sparingly, the font includes decorative flourishes in the brace, bracket and en dash positions.

A neat face with pronounced spur serifs which several foundries have already digitized. We like ours better though, because we have drawn a lowercase which was lacking in the original.

Barnhart Bros. & Spindler of Chicago introduced this type in 1888.

The Barnhart Bros. & Spindler foundry put out a caps-only face called Dante. We liked it, but felt it needed a lowercase. The result here is a rather nice square design, which has become a personal favorite.
