About Doyald Young Font Family


This is the personal foundry of Doyald Young. Since 1955, Doyald Young has specialized in the design of logotypes, corporate alphabets, and typefaces. He has designed logotypes and trademarks for the industrial design firm of Henry Dreyfuss Associates, California Institute of Technology, University of California at Los Angeles, exhibition catalogs for UCLA’s Clark Memorial Library, The Music Center of Los Angeles County, Mattel Toys, Max Factor, and Vidal Sassoon. Recently he completed the redesign of Prudential Insurance Company of America’s company name and corporate font. With Don Bartels, designed the GE Logo Font for General Electric Company’s corporate identity program. As an associate of International Design Associates of Japan, designed logotypes for over a dozen hotels, including restaurants, bars and amenities: ANA Hotel Tokyo, Hilton International Japan, Tokyo Hilton, Hilton Osaka, Narita Golf Club, Pacific Star Hotel, Guam, Palace Hotel Tokyo, and the new 30-story Kintetsu Hotel at Universal City Osaka, and designed The Hawaiian Sony Open logo for Mari Makinami, Design Resource. His entertainment credits include: Liza Minnelli and Frank Sinatra specials, Disney’s 30th Anniversary Celebration, Harry Connick Jr., k.d.lang, Bette Midler, Prince, The Grand Reopening of Carnegie Hall, The Grammy Awards, The Annual Academy of Country Music Awards, The Golden Globe Awards, and The Tony Awards, and most recently, the Art Directors Guild logo. Mr. Young has served as typographical consultant to Xerox Corporation, Southern California Edison Company, and Bechtel Corporation, designed fonts for Esselte Letraset, Agfa Corporation, Visual Graphics Corporation, and consulted with Emerson Stern and the Salk Institute on the development of a written American Sign Language alphabet for The National Institutes of Health. For Faidon Design of Gotenberg Sweden, collaborated on the design of Vestia, a securities organization. He is a member of AIGA, and currently teaches lettering and logo design at Art Center College of Design, where he taught lettering, logo design, and typographic basics from 1955 to 1978, then again from 1998. In 2001 Art Center named him ìInaugural Master of the Schoolî for teaching and his contribution to the field of art and design. Doyald is a graphic designer, typographer, teacher, lecturer and self-published author of Logotypes & Letterforms, Fonts & Logos (a Western Art Directors Club silver medalist), and The Art of the Letter, an extravagantly printed and engraved book about his work published by SMART Papers. The book was given to attendees of AIGA events in his 40-city lecture tour. Most recently, a promotional book for The Ligature, a Los Angeles engravers & lithographers, The Ligature on Ligatures, designed by Kuhlmann/Leavitt with additional text by Penny Benda. He was born in Texas and left at an early age and worked as a hotel bellman, an usher at Radio City Music Hall, and as a Santa Fe Railroad freight brakeman on caboose 2005 in Winslow, Arizona. He attended Los Angeles City College, Los Angeles Trade Technical Jr. College, and Art Center College of Design where he has taught for 27 years and holds the honorary title “Inaugural Master of the School.” He has lectured internationally: Stockholm, The Hague, London, Glasgow, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Seoul, Daejon, Mexico City, Merida, Guanajuato, Toronto, Montréal and Vancouver B.C., in Paris his presentation was delivered by Jean François Porchez. He is a member of AType I and AIGA, works by himself and has lived in Sherman Oaks, California for 45 years in a house designed by Gregory Ain.
