Linotype

Linotype has made an enormous impact on the type industry for over a century, continuously producing high-quality, world-renowned fonts.

Part of the secret to the longevity of Linotype’s success is the fact that the company has been under the leadership of some of the industry’s most prominent figures. One such leader was Mike Parker, a trailblazer in type, who played a major part in turning type design into a digital medium. It was because of innovative thinkers like him that Linotype’s Helvetica typeface became one of the world’s most-used typefaces.

C.H. Griffith was commissioned by the American telephone company, Bell, to design a typeface which would be particularly suited to small, compressed sentences and inferior paper quality. The font was intended for use in the company’s telephone books. Griffith had already had experience with the conception of newsprint fonts and was interested in legibility issues. In 1922 Griffith created the Legibility Group, which contained particularly legible fonts predestined for newspapers. Bell Gothic has all the typical characteristics which optimize a font’s legibility.

OCR-A OCR-A

The goal of this font design was to create forms which could be used and reproduced electronically and remain legible. Technicians from the European Computer Manufacturers’ Association and Adrian Frutiger combined strict mathematical criteria with typographic tradition to solve both technical and aesthetic problems. OCR was the resulting font and was made a world standard in 1973. The font has an objective, technical character and was created specifically for multimedia, although its distinctive appearance has also made it a popular typographical trend.

Aquinas™ Aquinas™

Aquinas was designed by David Quay in 1989. It is distinguished by the contrast between its upright, generous capitals and its narrow, slanted lower case letters which look almost like italics. The combination of these so different alphabets creates an opportunity to give texts an unusual yet elegant look. Aquinas is suitable for both running text and headlines and should be used in point sizes of 10 or larger. The lyrical and sophisticated feel of Aquinas makes it a particularly good typeface for poems, songs and other artistic texts.

Linotype Atomatic is part of the Take Type Library, selected from the contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. German artist Johannes Plass designed his font in one strongly-crafted weight. Linotype Atomatic seems to mirror the fast pace and technology of modern times. The slight lean to the right gives an impression of speed and movement. Linotype Atomatic is intended exclusively for headlines in larger point sizes.

Wilhelm Klingspor Gotisch™ Wilhelm Klingspor Gotisch™

Wilhelm Klingspor Gotisch appeared in 1925 with the Klingspor font foundry in Offenbach, Germany. Designer Rudolf Koch based his work on the Gothic forms of the 14th century and his broken letter font is often seen in advertisements. However, the ornamental letters do not match today’s legibility standards and Wilhelm Klingspor Gotisch is therefore recommended for use in headlines and short texts with a point size of 12 or larger.

Linotype Dot is part of the Take Type Library, featuring the winners of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contest. Designed by Lucy Davies, the figures are composed of a combination of white and black dots and the contrast makes the font look like points of light and darkness. The general impression of Dot lies somewhere between ornamental and technical. It combines well with sans serif and calligraphy fonts.

Linotype Killer™

Linotype Killer™ Linotype Killer™

Linotype Killer is part of the Take Type Library, selected from the contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests from 1994 and 1997. Designed by German artist Andre Nossek, the font seems to describe the Technosound of the 1990s with its electronically produced sights and sounds. It represents repetition, mass production and conformity. The alphabet consists exclusively of capital letters, all based on a rectangular form, all of the same height, and, with the exception of the ‘I’, all of the same width. The cool and distant Linotype Killer is best suited to short headlines.

Corona®

Albums

3 fonts from $29.00
Corona® Corona®

Decreasing width of the American newspaper web led to narrower news columns, and a demand for a more condensed typeface. Reaction from the quiet texture of Excelsior suggested a stronger contrast, more like Regal. Griffith designed Linotype Corona, which has been the leading American news design for the last thirty-five years. Extreme pressure for large sizes on narrow columns lead to condensed teletypesetter versions that lacked legibility, particularly in many of the unlicensed versions.

Undertaken in 1957 for Deberny & Peignot, Adrian Frutiger’s Meridien develops the Latin form into a classical text face of brilliant texture. Effective distribution of this exceptional face has been limited to France. Monotype Apollo can be seen as the Monotype version of this design; Sofratype’s Opera is a newstext version.
