Linotype

Linotype has made an enormous impact on the type industry for over a century, continuously producing high-quality, world-renowned fonts.

Part of the secret to the longevity of Linotype’s success is the fact that the company has been under the leadership of some of the industry’s most prominent figures. One such leader was Mike Parker, a trailblazer in type, who played a major part in turning type design into a digital medium. It was because of innovative thinkers like him that Linotype’s Helvetica typeface became one of the world’s most-used typefaces.

Romic™ Romic™

Typeface designer and Letraset type director Colin Brignall created the font Romic. The character of the strokes as well as the serif forms give the font its calligraphic look. The placement of the serifs, on the upper left and lower right of a character, also distinguishes this typeface and allows the figures to be set very close to one another. The dots on the i and j do not hang in the air, rather, they are connected to the rest of the letter with a light, serif-like stroke. The elegant and lively Romic is legible even in smaller point sizes. It is best used in middle length texts and headlines and wherever an individual and sophisticated image is the goal.

Pepperwood™ Pepperwood™

Pepperwood is a joint work of the typeface designers K.B. Chansler, C. Crossgrove and C. Twombly. These artists also created the typefaces Rosewood, Zebrawood and Ponderosa together and as the names suggest, all of these typefaces are so-called wood types. The origins of this kind of typeface can be found in the early 19th century. Called Italian or Italienne, these typefaces quickly became very popular. They are distinguished by square serifs whose width is larger than the stroke width of the characters. When the letters are set together, the heavy serifs build dark horizontal bands. Pepperwood has a couple of unique characteristics of its own. Small squares decorate the middle of the letters and the edges of the serifs are not straight, rather, they have small, fine tips. Pepperwood is reminiscent of the Wild West with its shootouts and heroes, but also suggests the glamor of the 1970s with their platform shoes and wild hair-dos. The different weights allow a large range of design possibilities. Used carefully in headlines, Pepperwood is sure to draw attention.

Ashley Script™ Ashley Script™

With Ashley Script, designer Ashley Havinden immortalized his own handwriting. The typeface appeared in 1955 and reflects the spirit of the times. Most striking is the sharp form of the lower case s and the shape of the d, which looks like the mirror image of a six. These componants interrupt the otherwise homogeneous alphabet and give the font a dynamic character. The individual figures look like handwriting spontaneously and quickly put to paper. Ashley Script is best used in point sizes larger than 12 and suitable for middle length texts and headlines.

ITC Temble™ ITC Temble™

ITC Temble was designed by Andreu Balius and draws influences from the European mediaeval period of King Arthur. The characters combine the angular qualities of mediaeval metallurgy with a modern tempo and the symbols included in the font exhibit the same stylistic forms. ITC Temble is perfect for work which should have a mediaeval or mystical appearance.

ITC Tempus® ITC Tempus®

ITC Tempus is the work of British designer Phill Grimshaw. He claims that every calligrapher’s aspiration is to draw perfect roman capitals with a pen, but admits that this is extremely difficult. For this typeface, Grimshaw used a fountain pen on cheap, porous paper and, of course, the ink bled. The resulting forms are classic but their rugged edges deviate from the perfection of roman type. And “Tempus Sans is just Tempus with the serif surgically removed, yet the proportions of the characters work nicely,” says Grimshaw. Because of its rough quality, the typeface works best in larger point sizes, yet maintains its characters even in smaller sizes.

ITC Mona Lisa® ITC Mona Lisa®

ITC Mona Lisa was designed by Pat Hickson, a stark and elegant typeface originally drawn in the 1930s by Albert Auspurg. The original drawings were long gone and the surviving metal type was already severely worn when Hickson studied Auspurg’s design for his recreation. The result is a typeface which melds the flavor of the 1930s with current design standards. ITC Mona Lisa displays all the suave sophistication of Fred Astaire and Greta Garbo.

ITC Hornpype™ ITC Hornpype™

ITC Hornpype is the work of California freelance designer Mott Jordan, a cheerful display face inspired in part by the cartoons of the 1920s and 30s. According to Jordan, the typeface’s name and three-dimensional quality can be traced to an early cartoon in which a cat blows on a horn with such force that the instrument bulges out. For the three-dimensional look, Jordan added highlights to the thicker strokes to create letters that look as though they were, in his words, “squeezed from a toothpaste tube”. Jordan suggests his eye-catching font for shorter words in larger point sizes. ITC Hornpype is a lively font perfect for anything needing a “fun, goofy” look.
