
Agfa-Gevaert, the well-known photographic film, chemicals and paper manufacturer and Bayer subsidiary, entered the typography scene in 1982 by acquiring an interest in Compugraphic Corporation, the American phototypesetter company. The whole of Compugraphic was purchased in 1988, and became the Agfa Compugraphic division. Agfa continued the development of font rendering systems started by Compugraphic.
In the mid-1990s the Creative Alliance brand was launched, where Agfa promoted and developed new fonts by independent type designers. By 1997 cooperation with Monotype had reached the level of combining their font catalogues, and in July 1998 Agfa acquired Monotype and became known as Agfa Monotype
On March 2, 2000 Agfa announced its acquisition of ITC for an undisclosed sum.
In November 2004, TA Associates purchased a majority interest in Agfa Monotype from Agfa Corp and the company was renamed Monotype Imaging Inc.
