The 2004 ATypI conference, Crossroads of Civilizations, is in Prague, Czech Republic: meet, listen to lectures, view presentations and participate in workshops — all about type.
The annual conference of the Association Typographique Internationale Prague, Thursday, 30 September to Sunday, 3 October 2004
In 2004 the annual conference of ATypI is taking place in Prague, Czech Republic. Prague is among the most beautiful European capitals — “the golden city of one hundred spires”, the city of Mozart, Smetana and Dvorak, of Kafka, Kundera and Havel. Its strategic location in the heart of Europe allows easy access to major European cities such as Berlin, Bratislava, Vienna and Budapest.
Prague is one of the oldest international centres of printing, publishing, and print design. Czech typography is world-famous for its daring innovation, sophistication and originality. The names of Preissig, Dyrink, Teige, Kalab, Menhart, Hlavsa, and Tyfa belong to the hall of fame of international typographic design. The theme of the conference — Crossroads of Civilizations — refers to the unique place that Prague occupies in the world of both graphic design and ideas.
The conference will focus on the special creative contribution of Central and East European designer world and its relation to international typographic developments. In addition, there will be papers covering many aspects of the creative work of typographic designers worldwide. The conference programme is being developed by Frantisek Storm, the well-known type designer and educator, assisted by Alan Záruba, Peter Bilak, Filip Blazek, Erik Spiekermann, Adam Twardoch, Emil Yakupov and Maxim Zhukov.
