MyFonts’ review: Fine Fonts are the typefaces of Englishmen Michael Harvey and Andy Benedek. The fonts really do live up to the fine name! Michael’s work in lettering started when he was assistant to the great Reynolds Stone. With stone-cut lettering in Westminster Abbey and the National Gallery, years of teaching, and 100s of hand-drawn book jackets to his credit, it’s difficult to think of anyone who’s achieved more than Michael as a craftsman of letters in late 20th century Britain. His first major type families were Ellington and Strayhorn, which show much of the liveliness known to admirers of his book jackets. Fine Fonts releases the fonts that Michael and Andy have been working on together: Aesop is an elegant pen-drawn design, Balthasar is a languid calligraphic face with stencil-like gaps, Fine Gothic is a blackletter family, Marceta is a distinctive uncial, Tisdall Script is jaunty, and unintimidating, and Songlines is the most unusual design – a slender all-caps face with two alternate forms for each character

Biography

Fine Fonts was formed to tap the creative skills of Michael Harvey and Andy Benedek.

Before its formation, Michael Harvey had a very long and distinguished career as a lettercutter, a lettered bookjacket designer, type designer and teacher. He has designed numerous typefaces which have been published by Monotype, Adobe and The Dutch Type Library.

In contrast, Andy Benedek began his working life as a metallurgist—discovering the joy of lettering and font design later in life. and now earns his crust by drawing lettering and fonts for corporate and brand identities, magazines and newspapers.

Together as Fine Fonts, they possess all the necessary expertise for successful font design. The launch of Fine Fonts in 2000 was marked by the introduction of an entirely original display face, Aesop and that tradition has been maintained with later releases.
