Best place to study type design and typography in the UK.
The Department of Typography and Graphic Communication at the University of Reading is one of the world’s pre-eminent establishments for the study of typography and type design.
With an impressive roster of lecturers and former students, the undergraduate and postgradutate courses promise hard work but also high chances of work with pre-eminent book, newspaper and magazine publishers as well as other organzations needing clear and imaginative graphic communication such as large software companies, and type design houses.
The department, formed as a breakaway from the Art Department in in 1968 by Michael Twyman grew to international pre-eminence under his leadership, a position relinquished only in 1997. The department is now headed by Dr. Sue Walker.
Current lecturers include Gerry Leonidas, Gerard Unger, James Mosley.
Si Daniels graduated from the degree program in 1995 and has fond memories of the place. He now keeps up typographic standards at Microsoft and reminisced:
Unlike most undergraduates studying at the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication, I transferred to the course after applying to study another subject, in my case Psychology. Even without an ‘art-school’ background I found the theory and history aspects of the course compelling. As well as being just plain interesting, these classes provided historical examples backed by research to support an extensive set of typographic design rules and guidelines. The department’s supportive staff helped me build upon this foundation, by giving me room to experiment and develop my own design style. The course also provided the tools and equipment I needed to build technical skills essential in the ‘real world ’.
