The Northern Block’s Video Game Collection is a curated list of geometric type designs influenced by the art, culture and most importantly the act of playing video games.
Video games today are one of the most powerful forms of artistic expression and having a typeface that is in perfect tune with its digital environment is essential to how people read the game.
Knul, modern design with a smooth, elegant and monoline appearance, was used in the game for EA Sports FIFA 2012 up to 2015. Borda, a carefully drawn typeface with precise angles, became the in-game font of choice for Ubisoft’s ‘The Division.’ And in 2015 2K Games decided to use the Lintel typeface in the well-received title ‘Mafia III.’ The understated simplicity of the letterforms complimented the vivid production of the gaming landscape.
Learning how these type designs work in a video game title has given us more understanding to help improve our skills and develop better designs to use in-game titles including the recently released Celdum & Oyko.
