Introducing Posterama
Allan Haley in News on June 9, 2016
The Posterama™ family is out of time – and into the future. It’s a suite of 8 stylistic designs that draw themes from 20th century history, art, architecture, cinema, culture – and more. Drawn by Jim Ford with help from Karl Leuthold, Posterama’s wide and diverse palette of typographic playfulness captures the charm of iconic imagery from the last 100 years, and transforms seamlessly to accommodate different times, moods or themes.
Each of Posterama’s styles share the same sans serif foundation, but are differentiated by historic design suggestions. Each style is also available in 6 weights and a unique complement of alternate letters, providing a huge variety of typographic choices. According to Ford, “the significance of the assigned years in the naming system is not necessarily to date the type styles, but rather to symbolize the times typographically.”
Posterama 1901 takes design hints from the Arts & Crafts movement; Posterama 1913 has roots in the Armory Show, the first exhibition of modern art in America; Posterama 1919 echoes Modernism and the Bauhaus; Posterama 1927 is all about the Jazz Age; Posterama 1933 combines Art Deco and 1930s cinema imagery; Posterama 1945 has Constructivist and Cold War undertones; Posterama 1984 melds Orwellian dystopia and the Pacman® game; Posterama 2001 pays homage to physics and the space odyssey film.
“Posterama’s wide and diverse palette of typographic playfulness captures the charm of iconic imagery from the last 100 years, and transforms seamlessly to accommodate different times, moods or themes.”
The typographic equivalent of a DeLorean with a flux capacitor, Posterama easily whisks readers and game players back to a time and place. It’s also a pretty terrific typeface for posters, wordmarks, headlines, and sub heads.
