Hector Guimard of France

Born: Lyon, 1867
Died: New York, 1942

French architect and furniture designer in the Art Nouveau style, who made an enduring contribution to public lettering by incorporating the distinctive letters “METROPOLITAINE” into his entrances to the Paris Metro, at the beginning of the 20th century.

The letters have been inspiration for the typeface Metropolitaines by URW.
