Jason Castle

Jason Castle has had a love for books and lettering ever since he could read (and write). Noticing his fascination for what one teacher considered “ostentatious” handwriting, around the age of 10, Jason’s father taught him an elaborate form of calligraphy known as copperplate script (which much later became the inspiration for his digital font by that name). In his twenties — during what he calls his “medieval period” — Jason was performing medieval music and studying lettering and illumination of the Middle Ages and early Renaissance. Jason later became a computer programmer for many years, but needing a more creative outlet, eventually combined his love of computers with that of typography and started creating digital fonts. Not surprisingly, his first attempt was a face inspired by the Middle Ages, Goudy Text. While keeping his day job, Jason continued to create fonts for fun, and before long started getting commissions to digitize old typefaces, mostly from the art deco period. Eventually quitting his day job, Jason dedicated himself full-time to digital type design, reviving antique typefaces as well as creating original designs. More recent work includes custom type design for clients such as S&W Foods, Chevron, and Shiseido. A native Californian, Jason is currently studying psychology at Dominican University of California. He looks forward to finishing his degree and, hopefully, finding time to create many more typefaces.

Radiant Extra Condensed CT Radiant Extra Condensed CT

I was commissioned by the Emporium (now Macys) to digitize Radiant Bold Extra Condensed (originally designed by Robert Middleton in 1940) for use in their Sunday supplement to the San Francisco Examiner. For several years, I stubbornly refused to add the lowercase letters to the font, because I thought it looked best just used with caps, but finally relented, added the lowercase letters and at the same time created two more weights as well: Light and Medium. Used very large and carefully, these faces can be quite elegant.

Subsequently, other weights and styles were added to the CastleType revival, including Agency Gothic Bold and the very popular Agency Gothic Inline.

Tambor™ Tambor™

Over the years I have bought many books and music CDs in persuit of my passion for African and Latin (and especially Afro-Latin) cultures. I've noticed that a great number of these books and CDs feature either of two popular display fonts that are, in my opinion, very much overused. As an alternative, I designed Tambor. The Tambor family includes seven styles.

Xavier™

Xavier™ Xavier™

The Xavier family of typefaces is based on the delightful deco typeface called Ashley Crawford, originally designed in 1930 by Ashley Havinden. After designing Xavier Black (Serif) and Xavier Sans Black, I added Bold Sans, Medium and Medium Sans and finally added lowercase to the medium weights. Although more manageable than Ashley Crawford, Xavier, due to its very playful nature (splayed A, M, etc.) needs to be used with care, especially in terms of spacing. Xavier is a playful typeface and I have been particularly pleased to see it used in children’s books.

Copperplate Script™

Albums

1 font from $39.00
Copperplate Script™ Copperplate Script™

One of the more elegant script fonts available, this design is based on calligraphic handwriting called “Copperplate” because of the copper plates that it was etched into for reproduction. This face is not related to Copperplate [Gothic] by the American type designer, F.W. Goudy. The name Copperplate comes from the fact that writing masters used to hand-write their books and then send them to an engraver who recreated all the subtle details onto copper plates, which where then used to print the handwriting books.

Dionisio™

  |  available for Desktop, Web, App, Epub and Server

Albums

5 fonts from $49.00
Dionisio™ Dionisio™

Dionisio, a CastleType original, takes its inspiration from one of the overlooked treasures of the CastleType library: Ransahoff. The latter is extremely condensed and very elegant. I particularly like its hairline slab serifs and cross-bars. I decided to use it as a starting point for a new design, but to make the proportions more classic and to make it more sensuous with gentler curves and bracketed cross-bar serifs.

Goudy Lombardy™

  |  available for Desktop, Web, App, Epub and Server

Albums

1 font from $19.00
Goudy Lombardy™ Goudy Lombardy™

Based on drawings of Medieval versals (capitals used at beginning of verses in manuscripts) by Frederic W. Goudy. Works beautifully as initials with Goudy Text Oldstyle. Uppercase only, no numerals or punctuation; several letters have alternates. Framed, inversed caps are also included. This version of Lombardy Capitals is purposely less regular and clean-cut than some available to maintain a more hand-drawn look similar to the irregularities that would be found in a Medieval manuscript. The alternates help contribute to that look.

Fat Freddie™

A bold, playful typeface named after my late and much-missed grey cat, Freddie, who was my best buddy for 18 years.

Sonrisa™

  |  available for Desktop, Web, App, Epub and Server

Albums

8 fonts from $29.00
Sonrisa™ Sonrisa™

Sonrisa is a design that evolved from my sketches of the skeletal structure of Jakob Erbar’s Koloss, trying to discover its underlying essence without all the contrast and bulkiness of the original design. Sonrisa Thin was the resulting font, from which the other weights of the family were developed. Gentle curves, open counters, generous x-height, and sleekly tapered terminals give Sonrisa a very legible, modern, elegant appearance. When she saw the first draft of this typeface, the smile on my friend Jennifer’s face gave me the idea to call it “Sonrisa” (Spanish for “smile”). Jennifer, a clinical psychologist, described Sonrisa’s personality as: "happy, clean, clear, open, joyful, spacious, playful, calm. I can see it being used for body product lines such as oils and lotions. Can see it being used in home/travel magazines or even Architectural Digest. Yoga magazine, definitely."

Laureat™

Laureat™ Laureat™

Based on hand-drawn letters from a Russian poster. The Cyrillic version is still in development. Uppercase only, but each letter has four different sizes for creating very interesting typography.

Albums

2 fonts from $29.00
Metropolis CT™ Metropolis CT™

Metropolis Bold was commissioned by Publish magazine for their 1990 redesign. Although other digital versions exist, I think this was the first one and is characterized by extremely pointy serifs. It is well to remember in laying out copy for Metropolis to allow plenty of white space in the layout. Metropolis is based on the 1932 Stempel cut as designed by W. Schwerdtner.

Trio CT

  |  available for Desktop, Web, App, Epub and Server

Albums

3 fonts from $39.00
Trio CT Trio CT

I was commissioned by Publish magazine to digitize Trio in 1990. Originally designed in a Light weight only, Trio is now available in Medium and Bold weights as well. Uppercase only, but each weight includes two alphabets, one more “deco,” the other more “modern.”

Zagora™

Eden CT

  |  available for Desktop, Web, App, Epub and Server

Albums

3 fonts from $39.00
Eden CT Eden CT

Eden Light, originally designed by the American type designer Robert H. Middleton in 1934, was commissioned by Publish magazine for a redesign in 1990. When I found a specimen of Eden Bold a couple years later, I decided to digitize it also. Subsequently, I created a Medium weight. Very squared and compact with thin slab serifs, Eden includes support of all European languages that use the Latin alphabet.

Samira™

  |  available for Desktop, Web, App, Epub and Server

Albums

1 font from $29.00
Samira™ Samira™

I must admit that I am not a big fan of the Art Nouveau style. However, I found this particularly beautiful alphabet and decided to use it as the basis for this new font. Very graceful, elegant, and dare I say, organic.

Includes some intertwined ligatures. Complete uppercase, numerals, basic punctuation. Supports most Western European languages.

Goudy Text CT

  |  available for Desktop, Web, App, Epub and Server

Albums

1 font from $19.00
Goudy Text CT Goudy Text CT

This version of Goudy Text is based on drawings from which Frederic Goudy based his Goudy Text typeface. However, there is a big difference between his original drawings (in The Alphabet and Elements of Lettering) and the subsequent metal type version, and my version maintains the greater warmth (and irregularities) of the original drawings. Goudy’s Lombardy caps look especially nice when used as initial capitals with Goudy Text.

Cloister Black CT

  |  available for Desktop, Web, App, Epub and Server

Albums

1 font from $39.00
Cloister Black CT Cloister Black CT

A clean-cut blackface type. As with all highly ornate typefaces, this should not be used in all caps.

Albums

1 font from $49.00
Esencia™ Esencia™

Esencia, a CastleType original, was inspired by a Spanish stock certificate from 1941 with 11 beautiful art deco style letters for the words “PERFUMES y ESENCIAS”.

Slender, elegant, with a Spanish flare.

Plantain ™

  |  available for Desktop, Web, App, Epub and Server

Albums

2 fonts from $49.00
Plantain ™ Plantain ™

Plantain was commissioned by Smarter Image for their catalog design of several years ago. Very bold and tightly spaced; ideal for large headlines and ad work. This font also contains the Federal Express logo, as well as dingbats of a telephone, an American flag, etc. Named after one of my favorite foods: fried plantain; yum! (Original name: Plantin Adweight.)

Koloss CT

  |  available for Desktop, Web, App, Epub and Server

Albums

3 fonts from $39.00
Koloss CT Koloss CT

A well-designed bold art deco font. Very chunky. Uppercase, lowercase, numerals and punctuation. CastleType additions to the Koloss family include Koloss Bold Condensed and Koloss Bold Wave. The latter was used beautifully in the wonderful children’s book The Leaf Men (and the Brave Good Bugs) written and illustrated by William Joyce.

Chinoise™

  |  available for Desktop, Web, App, Epub and Server

Albums

1 font from $49.00
Chinoise™ Chinoise™

Chinoise, a CastleType original, is based on hand lettering that is reminiscent of a style of ancient Chinese square-cut ideograms (perhaps cut in wood), and therefore the suggestive name “Chinoise” for this new design.

Maximillian CT Maximillian CT

Another one of those faces that caught my eye in one of my art deco type books, and I wanted it. After I finished the face, I noticed that there is a more clean-cut version of this face in digital format, but my version retains more of the funkiness of the original drawings.

Jensen Arabique™

Jensen Arabique™ Jensen Arabique™

This elegant typeface was suggested to me by type critic Daniel Will-Harris.

Albums

3 fonts from $59.00
Goudy Trajan Pro™ Goudy Trajan Pro™

Goudy Trajan Pro is based on the drawings by F.W. Goudy of his rendition of the capital letters inscribed on the Trajan column in Rome, rather than on his subsequent metal type, Trajan (Title), released in 1930. Goudy Trajan Pro includes almost 1500 glyphs in each of three weights, including: uppercase, alternates, swash caps, small caps, vertically centered small(er) caps, dozens of fleurons, and much more. Supports Latin, Cyrillic and modern Greek scripts. Many thanks to Krassen Krestev, Sergiy Tkachenko, and Adam Twardoch for their suggestions for improving the Cyrillic glyphs; and to Alex Sheldon for his suggestions for swash caps and improved OpenType features.

Sculptura CT

Sculptura CT Sculptura CT

A wonderful, very condensed, 3D font.

A few years ago, I was commissioned to digitize the letters from this typeface for the words ‘LEGENDS OF RODEO’ and liked the look of it so much that I went ahead and digitized the rest of the alphabet.

Goudy Stout CT

  |  available for Desktop, Web, App, Epub and Server

Albums

1 font from $49.00
Goudy Stout CT Goudy Stout CT

This face was recommended to me by Mark Solsburg, president of FontHaus. At first I was a bit reluctant to revive it, if for no other reason than Frederic Goudy’s admission that he created this design “in a moment of typographic weakness.” However, I put the sample that Mark sent me up on my bulletin board, and over a period of time, it grew on me. It finally got to the point that I had to recreate the face, and from the response that I’ve gotten, I’m glad I did! Uppercase only with numerals and punctuation.
