Jim Rimmer

Jim Rimmer’s background includes years with hot metal type in the composing room, and in the operation of the Linotype and the Monotype. He continued designing and cutting faces in metal in concert with those that he designed for digital format on his Macintosh. In 2000 and 2001 he completed two hot metal faces and has later finished a third: Hannibal Oldstyle for the printing of the book: Tom Sawyer in 2006. He used these typefaces in the books that he designed, illustrated, printed and occasionally wrote for his own private press, the Pie Tree Press in Vancouver.

Named in tribute to the members of the American Typecasting Fellowship, this font is an original expression of Jim Rimmer’s left-handed calligraphy. It was designed and cut in 24 p in the early 1980s, then cast as foundry type on Jim’s own Thompson typecasting machine.

Lapis was Jim Rimmer’s venture into a territory he'd earlier explored with his Lancelot and Fellowship faces. This time he stayed much longer, dug pretty deep, and had plenty of fun in there. The end result is the kind of mosaic of influences only a guy like Jim could consider, gather, manage and apply in a way that ultimately makes sense and works as a type family.

Cotillion is an original design Jim Rimmer finished just before the turn of the century. Alongside its evidence of Jim’s nostalgia at the deco type designs he was exposed to as a child, it distinctly shows a type designer who has become very comfortable with that rarest of design abilities: Bringing efficient typographic solutions to what is essentially a calligraphic endeavour.

Frederic Goudy joined Lanston as art advisor in 1920. One of his first initiatives was to design a new version of Garamond based on original Garamond designs of 1540. Goudy intended his free-hand drawings to be cut exactly as he had drawn them and fought with the workmen at Lanston to keep them from “correcting” his work. This new type was called Garamont (an acceptable alternate spelling) to distinguish it from other Garamonds on the market. (The other Garamonds on the market at that time were later confirmed to be the work of Jean Jannon.)

LTC Kaatskill was made specifically for use in an edition of Rip Van Winkle for the Limited Editions Club. “I feel that Kaatskill owes nothing in its design to any existing face, and the type therefore is as truly an American type as anything so hidebound by tradition as type can be.”- F. Goudy
