Keith Tricker

KEITH TRICKER. A TYPOGRAPHER’S TALE

My first introduction to typography, barring a kid’s set of ABC building blocks, was the pocket money purchase of a John Bull Printing Outfit, a sort of do-it-yourself rubber stamp kit with rubber characters, tweezers and an ink pad. I used it to create a business card which proclaimed me as leader of our neighbourhood gang, and learned my first lesson in the authority of type: people will believe anything they see in print!

An all singing, all dancing performer, Showbiz is the perfect font for those who want to sprinkle a little stardust on their typography and give a sense of occasion to their special announcements. It’s an in-line version of Studio K’s Red Top, Export Drive and Soft Rock, with which it shares the same basic outline and metrics. Mix and match them to stunning effect!

Soft Rock Soft Rock

Soft Rock is a bold condensed sans serif with rounded contours that contrives to be gentle and dynamic at the same time: rather like the soft rock bands (Chicago, Air Supply, Fleetwood Mac etc) after which it is named. It’s a warm, friendly font ideal for branding everything from soup to soft furnishings.

Regency

Regency is named after the style associated with the period, which is at once elegant and luxurious. A modern classic, it is influenced by Americana and Optima and combines the style of a serif face with the simplicity of sans serif.

This font family was inspired by a visit to the Duxford Air Museum just outside of Cambridge, UK, where the whole history of aviation is represented in a series of exhibits ranging from early prop planes to supersonic jetliners.

Home Grown

Home Grown is a hand-drawn font that is fresh, immediate and informal. As the applications here show it is especially well suited to food packaging and natural or organic products in particular. However, it can be used wherever a friendly, approachable feel is sought after.

Export Drive Export Drive

Export Drive is a bold condensed stencil font of the kind traditionally used to mark tea chests, packing cases and other goods in transit. Nowadays of course its applications are universal, although it is particularly well suited to branding or publishing projects which strive for a sense of freshness, urgency and immediacy, or a rugged, rough-and-ready feel.

Aspidistra

  |  available for Desktop, Web, App, Epub and Server

Albums

2 fonts from $35.00
Aspidistra Aspidistra

Aspidistra is a modern vintage typeface; which is to say a Studio K original with a period feel. It has a strong Art Nouveau influence (a distant cousin of Arnold Bocklin), but like most of my productions it’s more of a happy accident than a design choice: it evolved out of a fairly aimless doodle on a scratch pad (see gallery image). Why Aspidistra? In the first half of the last century an Aspidistra was a must have accessory of the aspiring middle classes (see George Orwells’ Keep the Aspidistra Flying), and to my mind this font evokes the chintzy charm of that era.

Jazz Age

  |  available for Desktop, Web, App, Epub and Server

Albums

2 fonts from $35.00
Jazz Age Jazz Age

Jazz Age is inspired by the Golden Age of Jazz, the Twenties and Thirties. Think Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, cocktails, flappers and the whole Art Deco thing. Oh, and don't forget the radios, by which I mean old Bakelite valve or tube radios with their grilles and fretwork. This font is a celebration of them too.

Bebopalula

No prizes for guessing this font family was inspired by the 1950s - the sounds (Buddy, Eddie, Elvis), the styles (polka dots, petticoats and Dior’s New Look), and the kitsch, from furry dice above the dashboard to plaster ducks over the mantlepiece! A particular point of reference is the furnishings and fabrics of the Fifties (with their distinctive kidney shapes and angular curves) as showcased in the Festival of Britain 1951.

Dynatron

  |  available for Desktop, Web, App, Epub and Server

Albums

4 fonts from $35.00
Dynatron Dynatron

Dynatron is a bold condensed retro-style font reminiscent of vintage product logos, labels and badges. I collect old radios as a hobby, and the name Dynatron is borrowed from an old (now long defunct) manufacturer of valve radios and gramophones. Dynatron is also partly inspired by the old sci-fi comic covers, an example of which I have mocked up here. It is also one of the first fonts to incorporate the 27th letter of the English alphabet: the'Th'glyph to substitute for the definite article (the) as recently invented by the Paul Mathis of Melbourne, Australia (see gallery).

Communiqué

Communiqué Communiqué

Communiqué is a variation on my Export Drive font family. It is a bold condensed stencil font of the kind traditionally used to mark tea chests, packing cases and other goods in transit. Nowadays of course its applications are universal, although it is particularly well suited to branding or publishing projects which strive for a sense of freshness, urgency and immediacy, or a rugged, rough-and-ready feel.

Pier Arcade

  |  available for Desktop, Web, App, Epub and Server

Albums

2 fonts from $35.00
Pier Arcade Pier Arcade

This font is inspired by all those end-of-the-pier amusement arcades and fairground rides. The glitz, glamour and thrills that soon turned to giddiness and nauseau after a spin on the Roller Coaster or a bumpy ride on the Dodgems! It’s also a bit of a nod to comic book graphics of the Marvel era and the superheroes who deliver knockout punches in a spew of drop shadow typography. With Pier Arcade you can now create your own fairground ride or comic book adventure. Enjoy!

Anvil

  |  available for Desktop, Web, App, Epub and Server

Albums

4 fonts from $39.00
Anvil Anvil

The days of hot metal may be behind us, but Anvil looks as if it has been forged in a smithy’s fire: a handsome, heavyweight display face that is both impressive and impactful. My working title for the font family was “Diamond” because of the distinctive angular shape of the letter “O”. This was the starting point for the design. The rest followed naturally.

Canterbury

Albums

2 fonts from $35.00
Canterbury Canterbury

Canterbury is named after the English cathedral city in the county of Kent, chiefly because its sculptural qualities are reminiscent of ecclesiastical architecture. It’s a monumental font in the sense that it is well suited to plaques, certificates and other formal inscriptions. It’s also suitable for any application that strives for a sense of elegance and dignity.

Skeleton Slab Skeleton Slab

Didn't someone say that this would be the year of the slab serif? Well, here it is finally: not a solid Egyptienne or a chunky Clarendon, but a Skeleton Slab that brings a new elegance to a classic form. I was thinking of calling it Ozymanidias, after Shelley’s poem, because it evokes memories of ancient runic inscriptions, but then I thought that was maybe a bit pretentious, and I decided I'd keep it simple and descriptive. Besides, I wasn't sure how to spell Ozymandias!
