Kristians Šics

Kristians Sics (b. 1961) is a graphic designer from Latvia. He has made the graphic standard of the Prime Minister of Latvia and several other time consuming projects. Kristians is the author of one of the first graphic novels in Latvia and has designed several hundred book covers and layouts. He taught graphic design in the Art Academy of Latvia and had been on juries of several book design contests. In 2008 Kristians with his wife moved to Mexico to peacefully sort out his drawings and typefaces.

Art Nouveau typeface “Gaisma Latin” (“Light” in Latvian) draws inspiration from Vienna Secession movement and Nordic National Romanticism. The work on the design started as drawings of several characters for the graphic standard for the Jugendstil museum in Riga. It contains characters for all the European languages as well as a huge set of contextual and stylistic alternates and historical characters to replicate texts of the era.

Fette Deutsche Schrift also known as Koch-Fraktur or Kochschrift was created by Rudolf Koch for Klingspor foundry between 1908 and 1910. The basis of this font is a publication in the magazine “Das Plakat” of September 1921. The font contains swash capitals to use as dropcaps, contextual alternates, glyphs for line endings, ligatures, discretional ligatures for use in German, ornaments and other OpenType features. It supports all the European languages using Latin alphabets (including slashed S and slashed long s used in Latvian old orthography till 1930s).
