Matthew Carter

Son of Harry Carter, Royal Designer for Industry, contemporary British type designer and ultimate craftsman, trained as a punchcutter at Enschedé by Paul Rädisch, responsible for Crosfield’s typographic program in the early 1960s, Mergenthaler Linotype’s house designer 1965–1981.

Carter co-founded Bitstream with Mike Parker in 1981. In 1991 he left Bitstream to form Carter & Cone with Cherie Cone.

He has in recent years designed Verdana and Georgia for Microsoft; these fonts are tuned to be extremely legible even at very small sizes on the screen.

Albums

26 fonts from $29.00
ITC Charter® ITC Charter®

Charter was designed in the mid-1980s by Matthew Carter. The typeface was designed with the limitations of low- and middle-resolution output devices in mind; hence the squared off serifs and the economy of diagonals and curves. The design, however, became an instant success on its own merits. It is an excellent everyday typeface for a wide variety of uses including books and technical manuals. Charter offers small cap, extension and alternate typographer sets that help to make it more versatile and functional.

Snell Roundhand was created by Matthew Carter for Linotype in 1966. The design is based on the handwriting of Charles Snell, an English writing master who wrote The Pen-man’s Treasury Open’d in 1694.

Snell is a connecting script that is clear and easy to read; use it for invitations, menus, packaging, and advertising.

The Paris foundry Deberny & Peignot was the first to release this design in 1912 (also known as Sonderdruck, it was adapted by many other foundries in the 1920s). This version was created in 1977 by Matthew Carter for Linotype. Cochin, named for the nineteenth-century printer Nicolas Cochin, has a small x-height with long ascenders and several unusual letter shapes, notably in the lowercase italic. Cochin brings an unusual look to short texts or display work such as invitations, packaging, and advertising.

ITC Galliard is an adaptation of Matthew Carter’s 1978 phototype design for Mergenthaler. Galliard was modeled on the work of Robert Granjon, a sixteenth-century letter cutter, whose typefaces are renowned for their beauty and legibility. Matthew Carter combined his design skills with computer-aided technology to produce this elegant revival.

Bell Centennial Bell Centennial

Matthew Carter designed Bell Centennial in 1978 specifically for AT&T Corporation (the name honors their 100th anniversary) to use in telephone books. Carter developed it to have high legibility at small sizes, and for composition on high-speed, cathode-ray-tube composing machines. (Bell Gothic, the typeface originally designed for telephone books in 1937 and for composition on the hot metal Linotype machines, was no longer usable in the new technology.) Bell Centennial is a sturdy, condensed sans-serif design that achieves great economy of space while being highly legible.

Charter BT Pro™

  |  available for Desktop, Web, App, Epub and Server

Albums

6 fonts from $39.00
Charter BT Pro™ Charter BT Pro™

Originally released in 1987, Charter incorporates three important features: compact set width to give economical copyfit; generous x-height to give readability at small point sizes; and sturdy open letterforms to give reliable reproduction at both typesetter and laser printer resolutions. The design brings a clarity and freshness to everyday documents, such as newsletters, textbooks, directories and technical manuals, where the reader’s concentration must not be interrupted by unfamiliar letterforms but where typographic dullness can itself impair comprehension. The Italic has cursive letterforms - so is instantly distinguishable, while being readable enough in its own right for continuous text.

In 2002 Matthew Carter was commissioned to create a new design to be cut in wood by the then nascent Hamilton Wood Type Museum. This was significant in that this was the one format for which Carter had not yet designed type. The new design emerged as a two-part chromatic type to be cut specifically in wood. Originally called Carter Latin, the font was renamed Van Lanen after one of the Museum’s founders. The first cutting and printing of the type took place in late 2009 and although it has been available through the Museum, contemporary wood-type production is expensive and few have acquired this font in wood.

Snell Roundhand®

Albums

3 fonts from $29.00
Snell Roundhand® Snell Roundhand®

Late in the seventeenth century, the English writing master, Charles Snell, decried all flourishes in the Puritan tradition and stood for a plain and efficient form of roundhand. The large x-height of these unadorned forms suited the purpose of the English roundhand, the standard commercial hand of the developing economic revolution, the typewriter face of its day. The overhangs on these letters were too large to cast in metal, blocking evolution to typography. Flourishes on the more elaborate forms could be adapted to fill body space, reducing or eliminating overhangs, allowing flourished scripts to appear in type. In 1966 Matthew Carter translated Snell’s script for photocomposition, later adding two more weights. With its large x-height and severely graceful texture, Snell, impossible in metal, appears as the most typographic of photocomposition scripts.

Auriol has a stylized stencil/brush look that reflects the Art Nouveau period. The type is accompanied by the third of the three great series of type flowers, Auriol’s art nouveau patterns.
