Arthur Eisenmenger of Germany

Born: 1914

The former Chief Graphician of the European Community, retired 1974. Shortly before retiring, designed the logotype-like symbol which is now used as as the euro sign, the symbol for the currency of the European Union. He reports that he drew the symbol “without much consideration” for some temporary purpose, and that it was not at all intended as a currency symbol.
