Über die Familie

Mönch Neue is a luxury serif family available in 4 styles and 7 weights, designed for editorial work, brand identity, and typographic systems that require historical depth without visual noise. It features sharp terminals, restless curves, and disciplined spacing, along with two styles that break the classical frame: a flowing Script and a Rebellion that abandons it entirely. Mönch Neue draws inspiration from two early twentieth-century designs that approached the same cultural moment from opposite directions. Peter Behrens' Behrens Antiqua (1907) embodies the energy of early modernism with constructed forms, sculptural terminals, and proportions that defy expectations. In contrast, Anton Durstmüller's Mönch Antiqua (1912) maintains a composed demeanor with a calmer rhythm and classical discipline, making it well-suited for book typography traditions. The concept behind Mönch Neue was straightforward: what occurs when these two voices are compelled into conversation? This is not about reconstruction or revival in the conventional sense, but rather a synthesis—an exploration of both designs, redrawing and translating structural ideas from early twentieth-century design into a contemporary context. While Roman and Italic styles uphold classical structure, the Script style recalls the organic, continuous nature of hand-drawn letters, derived from the same historical DNA but liberated from the constraints of the press. Rebellion pushes this freedom further, introducing expressive alternates and rule-breaking details infused with unapologetic decorative energy. The family comprises all seven weights and all four styles, totaling 28 fonts. OpenType features include ligatures, proportional and tabular figures, oldstyle figures, slashed zero, and extended European language support. History is not merely something to photocopy; it is a subject to engage with critically.

Über Monovo

Monovo is the innovative type universe crafted by Amondó Szegi, a distinguished type designer and educator at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) in Budapest. As the founder of Fontanatype, Hungary's first internationally recognized digital type foundry established in 1999, Szegi brings over 25 years of expertise to the field. His typefaces have gained prominence through T-26, where several designs reached bestseller status, alongside P22/IHOF and The Type Foundry. Licensed by Canva, his work continues to enhance editorial design, brand identity, and cultural projects globally. Fontanatype uniquely bridges historical references with contemporary practices, translating rhythm, structure, and typographic intelligence into functional type systems that respect tradition while innovating. Monovo builds upon this legacy with a conceptual focus, embodying the belief that letterforms are dynamic tools of communication—shaped by history, culture, and practical application, from editorial text to expressive design. Drawing inspiration from the rich lineage of typographic forms and the intentional challenge of rule-breaking, Monovo produces flat, iconic, and versatile typefaces that convey clarity, warmth, and purpose. Through Monovo, Szegi delves into appropriation, revival, and reinterpretation, treating letters as conceptual ready-made objects while broadening the creative horizons of type in contemporary design.
