Naufan Noordyanto

Naufan Noordyanto is an Indonesian type designer, graphic designer, and educator whose work sits at the intersection of typography, cultural research, and visual communication. Born in Pamekasan on the island of Madura, Indonesia, his early exposure to local visual traditions and vernacular lettering continues to inform his approach to type as a cultural and narrative medium. He is a lecturer in Typography at the Department of Visual Communication Design, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Surabaya, where he combines academic research with professional practice. This dual role shapes his design philosophy: typography is not only a tool for communication, but also a system of knowledge—rooted in history, shaped by context, and refined through methodical exploration. Naufan is the founder and type designer behind Fontcamp, an independent type foundry and typography research studio that operates with an educational mindset. Through Fontcamp, he explores type design as a form of “edufactory”—where teaching, research, and production inform one another. His typographic work often begins with archival study, cultural observation, and conceptual framing, resulting in typefaces that balance expressive character with structural clarity. Alongside his type practice, Naufan has worked for several years as an independent graphic designer and visual consultant, with a focus on typography-driven posters, visual identity systems, and illustration. His graphic works—particularly typographic posters—have been widely recognized and presented in international contexts. He has participated in more than 200 international exhibitions, competitions, and publications across 47 countries, as well as numerous national-level art and design events in Indonesia. Naufan holds a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Communication Design and a Master’s degree in Visual Communication Design Studies from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta (ISI Yogyakarta). His academic background reinforces a research-based approach to design, supported by grant-funded projects focusing on typeface development and typographic application. Beyond studio and classroom, he is active as a speaker, guest lecturer, and jury member in art and design events, and is involved in community-based initiatives in Madura that support local artists and students. Through education, collaboration, and sustained practice, Naufan’s work is driven by a commitment to expanding typographic awareness—locally rooted, yet globally engaged.
