Introducing a "NEO INDISCH SLAB" Font. DESCRIPTION: Neo Indisch Slab: Eene nieuwe stem voor de oude letteren van Soerabaja, Oost Java. "Neo Indisch Slab" is a slab-accented display sans-serif that reimagines Surabaya’s colonial-era lettering (1900–1940) through the lens of bricolage. In this design context, bricolage is a creative process of recombining visual fragments sourced from archival colonial typography to construct a new letter system with contemporary functional meaning. Inspired by typographic remnants from Surabaya’s city center, Indonesia (1900's)—specifically the ANIEM Building, Toko NAM, Toko Piet, and the Loe Tiong Yan storefront—this typeface geometrical structures with the blocky terminals characteristic of Indisch (Dutch colonial-era) sign painting. The letterforms feature low-to-medium contrast, squarish proportions, floating diagonals in the ‘M’ and ‘W’, and decorative flare terminals that create a distinctive visual rhythm. Designed as an homage to the Dutch East Indies typographic landscape, Neo-Indish Slab offers a modernized historical aesthetic suitable for contemporary branding, editorial design, and visual identities. Über Fontcamp

Fontcamp is an independent type foundry and typography research studio based in Surabaya, Indonesia. Rooted in an academic environment and operating at the intersection of design practice, cultural inquiry, and education, Fontcamp approaches type design as both a craft and a form of critical exploration. The foundry was established with a clear vision: to develop typefaces that are conceptually grounded, culturally aware, and thoughtfully constructed for contemporary visual communication. What distinguishes Fontcamp is its foundation as a “typography edufactory”—a model that integrates research, teaching, and production within a single creative ecosystem. Emerging from a university-based design laboratory, Fontcamp brings academic rigor into professional type design, emphasizing process, historical awareness, and methodological clarity. This background shapes a design voice that values meaning as much as form, and structure as much as expression. Fontcamp’s typographic perspective is driven by a deep interest in how letterforms carry cultural memory, social context, and narrative potential. Rather than treating type solely as a neutral tool, the foundry explores typography as a medium that reflects place, time, and human intention. Many of Fontcamp’s design investigations begin with archival study, vernacular lettering, architectural inscriptions, or overlooked typographic artifacts, which are then reinterpreted through contemporary design systems. This approach results in typefaces that feel grounded and distinctive without relying on stylistic novelty alone. Equally important is Fontcamp’s commitment to craft. Each project is developed through careful drawing, testing, and refinement, with close attention to rhythm, proportion, and usability. Conceptual ideas are always paired with functional considerations, ensuring that intellectual depth does not come at the expense of clarity or performance. The foundry believes that strong typography emerges from a balance between intuition and discipline. Beyond production, Fontcamp is driven by a broader mission to cultivate typographic literacy and appreciation. Through research, publications, exhibitions, and educational initiatives, the foundry actively contributes to the discourse surrounding typography—particularly from a Southeast Asian perspective that remains underrepresented in global type culture. This educational ethos reinforces Fontcamp’s long-term commitment to sustainability in design practice: building knowledge, not just assets. Fontcamp exists to explore how typography can be both locally rooted and globally relevant. By combining cultural research, academic insight, and professional craftsmanship, the foundry aims to contribute meaningful voices to the evolving landscape of contemporary type design.
