ITC Century® was designed by Tony Stan for the International Typeface Corporation (ITC) in 1975, as a modern expansion of the historic Century type family originally drawn by Linn Boyd Benton of American Type Founders (ATF). Benton’s design, created to meet Century Magazine’s demand for crisp readability in dense columns of text, became a cornerstone of American book typography of the last century.

ITC Century draws its design from a refined blend of the original Century and two other Benton typefaces: Century Expanded and Century Schoolbook. Stan based his work on Century Expanded but made the design sturdier and more versatile by incorporating the stronger strokes, smooth weight transitions, serifs, and bracketing found in Century Schoolbook.

The typeface features large counters and well-defined character shapes, which enhance its high readability levels. Additionally, subtle adjustments to character proportions have slightly condensed the design from the ATF original, enabling economical typesetting without sacrificing clarity.

Today, ITC Century is the definitive choice for academic prestige publishing – from university press books to Ivy League theses. Its authoritative forms and balanced proportions convey credibility and permanence, making it ideal for literary hardcovers where tradition and clarity are paramount.
