The symbols have been a topic of debate amongst historians.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe Tărtăria tablets are three \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/simple.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clay_tablet\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003etablets\u003c\/a\u003e discovered in 1961 in the village of Tărtăria(\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/simple.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hungarian_language\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eHungarian\u003c\/a\u003e: Alsótatárlaka). This is about 30 km (19 mi) from \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/simple.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alba_Iulia\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eAlba Iulia\u003c\/a\u003e in \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/simple.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Romania\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eRomania\u003c\/a\u003e.The tablets, dated to around 5300 BC, have symbols inclay: the Vinča symbols. Some claim they are a yet undeciphered language. If this is so, they would be the earliest known form of writing. In 1908 similar symbols were found during excavations, by Miloje Vasić (1869–1956) in Vinča. This is a suburb of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/simple.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Belgrade\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eBelgrade\u003c\/a\u003e (\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/simple.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Serbia\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eSerbia\u003c\/a\u003e), some 300 km from Turdaș. Later, more were found in another part of Belgrade. Since 1875 over one hundred and fifty Vinča sites have been found in Serbia alone. Many, including Vinča itself, have not been fully excavated. The culture of the whole area is called the Vinča culture.
