He is probably Finland’s most prolific type designer, and his foundry is simply named Suomi — which, of course, is what the Finns call their country. While working with us on this interview, he realized with a slight shock that he’s been in the font game for two decades. Yet his letterforms are as youthful and fresh as ever. His most recent offerings, such as the smart handwriting face Suomi Script and the spirited Suomi Sans, show a convincing mixture of attitude and maturity. Meet Tomi Haaparanta, our man in Helsinki.
In the eight months since Laura Worthington joined MyFonts, she has published an impressive run of original script fonts, all meticulously designed and each of them very successful. Based in Bonney Lake, south of Seattle, Laura Worthington turns her expertly crafted hand-lettering into fonts through “patience, a tendency towards being obsessive over the smallest details, and the ability to focus your attention on work that sometimes seems like you’re watching paint dry.” Meet Laura Worthington, a woman with a plan.
Dear Reader: Get ready for the longest Creative Characters interview ever. It’s not just that Stuart Sandler is a talented talker, he also has a lot to talk about. He runs and co-directs no less than five foundries and labels that MyFonts represents: the Font Diner, Sideshow, Breaking The Norm, the Tart Workshop and, most recently, Filmotype. He runs a handful of other companies and web shops as well, including Mister Retro. He is enamored with the lettering and typefaces of the 1920s through the 1960s, a period when letter-making was a very different craft indeed. Meet Stuart Sandler, a master of digital retro-americana.
He is a man of many talents: graphic designer, type designer, calligrapher, teacher and owner of a design studio in Georgia. We are told that he also makes great sushi. Having published his first fonts at T-26 less than ten years ago, he has rapidly become a force to be reckoned with on the North American type scene. His microfoundry Positype has published a respectable collection of text and display faces, and with TypeTrust he is into distribution as well. The latest news is that his Fugu typeface has won a “Certificate of Excellence in Type Design” in this year’s TDC2 Awards. Congratulations! Meet Neil Summerour, before he’s off to Japan again.
Botio Nikoltchev was born in Sofia March 29, 1978. Growing up in the fields of Bulgaria, he once found a little brick of dry clay shaped like the city map of Berlin. Taking it as a sign he took all he had — which wasn’t much but heavy. Botio went all the way to the promised town, the place to be: Berlin! And one step further: He studied communication design at the University of Applied Science Potsdam and took type design classes with Luc(as) de Groot. After his studies Botio worked with Ole Schäfer (primetype) on the Cyrillic characters of PTL Manual, PTL Manual Mono and PTL Notes. Since 2010 he has been collaborating with Ralph du Carrois and Erik Spiekermann as type designer and art director at Carrois Type Design, focusing on Cyrillic, Greek and Arabic language extensions and CI projects. In 2014, Botio founded his own type foundry lettersoup. Retail fonts: Ropa Sans Pro, PTL Manohara, FF Meta Serif Cyrillic + Greek. Open-source fonts: Ropa Sans, Sofadi One, Fira Sans. Corporate fonts: MMH Netrange Cyrillic + Greek + Arabic, Cisco, Meta Science, Exploratorium Sans. Icons: Museo de Art de Ponce.
With Spring comes a staggering number of new releases to the MyFonts catalog. While the first few months of the year are often a time for accelerated releases from many of our established foundries, the last few months have brought us not only several dozen notable new releases from MyFonts staples, but over a dozen new designers as well, all of whom we are very excited to welcome.
His typefaces are as varied as the places he’s lived in. Is that the reason why his foundry is called Schizotype? No, he says, the name was pure serendipity — as was the way in which his love affair with lettering and type began. He came to MyFonts as a hobbyist type designer offering a bunch of carefree and less-than-perfect fun fonts, but quickly honed his skills. He began putting out ever more sophisticated and increasingly successful typefaces, from luscious scripts to idiosyncratic yet usable text types. Meet Dave Rowland, calling from Koh Samui, Thailand.
Is it just us, or did 2009 seem shorter than usual? Those 365 days went by in a flash! Was it due to the time spent networking online? The MyFonts team has been tweeting and blogging and Facebooking on a daily basis; but it certainly hasn’t been a waste of time. We’ve felt a more direct connection to our users than ever before, and many of our readers have been active friends and followers.
