About the family

Bell Gothic was designed in 1938 by Chauncey Griffith for Mergenthaler Linotype. Initially commissioned by AT&T for use in its telephone directories, Griffith designed it for maximum legibility on low-quality paper, incorporating features like distinct crossbars on the uppercase 'I', a foot on the figure '1', and subtly angled terminals on the lighter weights of the b, d, h, and k.

Many decades later, these qualities enable Bell Gothic to perform well in current digital and hardcopy environments. It can be an ideal choice for industrial warning systems and safety signage. Its economical spacing, condensed proportions, large counters, and clear apertures ensure OSHA-compliant typography across vinyl, metal, and high-visibility PVC labels.

Design teams working on label templates, ambient safety zones, or in-plant UI overlays can harness Bell Gothic’s typographic clarity to communicate warnings swiftly and effectively.
