About the family

Introducing DIN 2014 version 3.000, the latest update to one of our bestselling type families. This release adds 12 long-awaited oblique styles across the Narrow and Condensed widths, along with two powerful new variable fonts. It builds on the previous major update, which introduced old-style figures, a slashed zero, circled digits, other useful OpenType features, and expanded the family's language support—making DIN 2014 an even more versatile and powerful tool for contemporary design.

DIN remains one of the defining typefaces of the modern grotesque genre and is in fact one of the most popular fonts used today. Developed in Germany during the early 20th century and standardized by the Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) in the 1930s, the font was initially designed for railways, road signs, house numbers, and general signage. Its distinctive character—defined by simplicity, clarity, and a touch of industrial roughness—comes from its geometric, practical, and space-efficient design.

Today, DIN-inspired typefaces are used far beyond their original applications, however, and have become especially popular in corporate design—with contemporary versions well-suited for continuous text and user interfaces, specifically. DIN (more mechanistic than, say, Helvetica) can appear either cool and detached or warmly industrial, depending on the application at hand. It’s this versatility, combined with its simplicity and clarity, that makes it a favorite among designers.

DIN 2014 specifically stands out with several unique features such as a range of narrow styles, straight vertical segments in lowercase oval letters, not just uppercase ones, and the option to switch between oblique and italic styles via a stylistic set. The core DIN 2014 family, meanwhile, includes three different width variations (Nornal, Narrow, Condensed) and 38 styles: six upright weights (ranging from Extra Light to Extra Bold) based on DIN Mittelschrift and six matching italics, twelve Narrow styles proportionally between DIN Mittelschrift and DIN Engschrift, twelve Condensed options and two Variable fonts.

Every DIN 2014 style features old-style figures, a slashed zero, circled digits, and an alternative stylistic set for lowercase characters with an italic design (Latin a, e + Cyrillic а, е, т, ц, и, and й). This allows users to switch between oblique and italic forms in the italic styles, or to use the straightened italic letterforms in upright styles whenever needed. Each style also includes a set of pictograms that match the font's weight.

DIN 2014 supports over 150 languages, including Extended Latin and Cyrillic scripts, and is complemented by two companion families that enhance its versatility: DIN 2014 Stencil and DIN 2014 Rounded.

Primary font characteristics are as follows:

  • 3 widths: Normal, Narrow, Condensed

  • 38 styles, each with 800+ glyphs

  • 22 OpenType features, including oldstyle figures and stylistic alternates

  • Extended Latin and Cyrillic support

  • Variable fonts

The typeface was designed by Vasily Biryukov and released by Paratype in 2015. The Condensed styles were added by Alexander Lubovenko and Isabella Chaeva in 2022.
