First seen on MyFonts: September 14th, 2000 OlympianDesigned by Matthew Carter and intended for newspaper use. Contemporary newspaper columns are narrow and require typefaces that are efficient in their use of width. The old-style diagonal emphasis is used to obtain maximum counter width and space between letters; Olympian appears larger than its Modern competitors. OlympianAfter the Second World War, the Ionic style replaced Modern Face as the favored typeface for newsprint. A couple decades later, it was in turn replaced by the next generation of newspaper fonts, a mix of Old Face, Transitional and Modern Face forms. Olympian itself tends toward the Old Face style but is nevertheless an example of this new generation, a result of a time of change and experimentation. ‘Olympian’ is a trademark of Linotype GmbH which may be registered in certain jurisdictions |
