About the family

Biondi Sans began with the wedge serifs shaved from Biondi, retaining its broad, squarish proportions and engraver-derived capital structure. Although the two families have since been independently reworked, their relationship remains visible. The result is a serifless interpretation of the lettering tradition associated with Copperplate Gothic; formal and architectural, with a cleaner contemporary finish.

Biondi Sans is an all-capitals display family. Full-size capitals occupy the uppercase positions, while the lowercase positions contain smaller capitals. With no conventional lowercase, it is intended for names, headings, labels, navigation, and other short passages rather than continuous text.

That structure is particularly at home in restaurant and hospitality identities. Establishment names can lead on façades, menu covers, etched-glass entrances, and hotel signage; smaller information can handle locations, cuisine, founding dates, menu sections, and private-room designations. The same lettering can continue through wine lists, cocktail menus, coasters, matchbooks, room directories, and formal stationery, giving the entire identity the character of engraved lettering without relying on ornamental serifs.

Wine, spirits, and specialty-food packaging offer similar opportunities. Broad capitals give producer and product names a strong silhouette, while weights and capitalization can distinguish vintages, varietals, regions, and classifications within compact labels. Biondi Sans also suits olive-oil tins, preserve labels, chocolate boxes, and gourmet gift packaging that calls for clarity with a degree of ceremony.

Its engraver ancestry carries naturally into architectural and cultural work: building names, brass plaques, lobby directories, donor walls, commemorative inscriptions, exhibition titles, gallery headings, and university or foundation identities. In publishing, it can organize architecture monographs, museum catalogues, restaurant guides, and historical nonfiction through covers, mastheads, chapter openings, running heads, bylines, and captions; a companion text face can handle the longer reading.
