Über die Familie

Ioannem is a typeface based on the 1604 book Ordinationes Generales Prouintiæ Sanctissimi Rosarij Philippinarum, printed by Juan de Vera—the oldest extant book produced with movable type in the Philippines. The typeface is wide and rounded, featuring wedge serifs that evoke an authentic historical feel. I studied a scanned copy of Ordinationes Generales, focusing on the letter proportions and details, and recreated the typeface to capture the essence of the original while making it suitable for modern use. Ioannem is available in multiple weights and supports multiple languages. Designed with a focus on conservation and functionality, Ioannem connects colonial-era printing styles with modern typographic requirements. Its structure and subtle historical character make it ideal for editorial design, book covers, historical publications, and branding projects that seek to evoke a sense of heritage and authenticity. Suitable for both display and body text, Ioannem provides a unique voice grounded in the Philippines' rich typographic heritage.
