AOETI ARCHIVAL RECORD ENTRY — STENCIL SERIES 431-B Preserved Specimen of Early Industrial Lettering This alphabet, cataloged as Reserves AOE, is preserved as a representative example of industrial-era typographic engineering used in manufacturing yards, military depots, and freight logistics from the mid–20th century. The letterforms demonstrate a geometric rigidity, constructed from sharp verticals, angled cuts, and deliberate segmentation intended to prevent material loss or obstruction when applied through metal or fiberboard stencils. Each glyph is built with unbroken weight distribution across heavy block shapes, interrupted only by precise separation channels that define the characters’ internal structure. These cuts were essential for structural continuity during repeated application, ensuring that no counterform or enclosed shape detached under field use. The result is an alphabet that balances utility and bold visual authority. Uppercase and smallcaps characters exhibit a commanding presence, with wide shoulders and clean mechanical angles reminiscent of wartime supply markings and standardized equipment identification. The numerals are notable for their transport-grade clarity, designed for rapid reading at distance and under low-visibility conditions. Archival notes indicate their use on storage drums, transit crates, and early computing punch-card housings. Though its origins are functional, Stencil Series 431-B carries an aesthetic of structured permanence — a design born from hard material constraints yet refined enough to withstand decades of operational wear. Today, it survives as a typographic artifact of an era defined by precision manufacturing, logistical discipline, and the austere beauty of applied industrial design.

Über Astigmatic

In 1873, the strange and fantastic story began. Nearly two centuries later, Brian J. Bonislawsky was born, and carrying on a mix of the the footsteps his ancestors before him took, he picked up the the traditions and founded the Astigmatic One Eye Foundry, which later expanded to become the Astigmatic One Eye Typographic Institute. (For more of the background story, see the Historical Perspective link below.) Since its founding Astigmatic has worked with dozens of designers, helping them forge their own foundries as well as helping to increase the quality of type created by Astigmatic and these other foundries. Astigmatic strives to continually increase its range of typographic scope; taking on expeditions to revive old typestyles, unearth long lost typefaces, forge new styles yet unseen, and begin to develop more comprehensive language typestyles of the WGL4 set size which includes Greek and Cyrillic extensions. If you are looking for a wide variety of typographic influence and style, the Astigmatic One Eye Institute is your source for type.
