Soma is a Hebrew typeface inspired by Japanese calligraphy and kanji, developed through a hands-on, expressive process using ink and a calligraphy pen.
The project grew out of two years of studying Japanese at a Japanese Language Center, where I developed a deep appreciation for the rhythm, balance, and emotional quality of traditional kanji writing. In Japanese, sumi (墨) refers to traditional black ink, and sumi-e (墨絵) describes the art of ink painting.
These practices emphasize flow, gesture, and expressive movement—qualities that strongly influenced the design of this typeface.

It is important to note that the name “Soma” is not directly related to ink. Rather, the connection lies in the visual and conceptual inspiration drawn from Japanese calligraphy and ink-based art forms.

Unlike the very few Hebrew typefaces influenced by Japanese aesthetics—often highly precise, technical, and digitally constructed—Soma explores a more organic direction. It embraces the imperfections, movement, and spontaneity of ink, aiming to reflect calligraphy as a living, expressive practice rather than a rigid system.

Each letter was first drawn by hand using ink and a calligraphy pen, then carefully digitized and refined in Illustrator and FontForge. The goal was to preserve the natural flow and energy of the original strokes while building a consistent and functional typographic structure, including balanced spacing and kerning.

Soma is designed for projects that seek a distinctive, artistic voice, and may particularly resonate with those interested in Japanese culture, calligraphy, and East Asian studies—offering a typographic expression of that connection.

Über LB Studio

LB Studio is an independent type and design studio focused on creating expressive, concept-driven visual work across typography, branding, and digital design. The studio explores the intersection between culture and visual language, drawing inspiration from both traditional and contemporary aesthetics. Its work is defined by a balance between structure and experimentation, combining clear design systems with more intuitive, handcrafted approaches. A central aspect of the studio’s practice is the development of typefaces that challenge conventional design norms. Rather than prioritizing perfect geometry, the studio embraces irregularity, movement, and human imperfection as essential elements of visual expression. By integrating influences from diverse cultural references, including East Asian calligraphy and contemporary design practices, LB Studio aims to create distinctive typographic voices that feel both authentic and relevant.
