Hello! I'm Thang. I live in Hanoi, and for the past few years, I’ve been teaching myself the art of type design. I wouldn't call myself an expert just yet—I’m still very much on the path—but I’ve reached a point where I want to share something I’ve made with you. It’s a serif typeface called Tonkin. I didn't set out to create the "perfect" font. To be honest, I think there are enough perfect fonts out there already. They are beautiful, sure, but sometimes they feel a bit cold, like a room where you’re afraid to sit down because you might mess up the pillows. I wanted Tonkin to feel more like a comfortable reclining chair in a friend’s house. It’s nice and it actively wants you to lean back and relax (hence the soft rounded corners). A Bit of a Backstory The name comes from where I live. Tonkin is the old name for Northern Vietnam. When I walk around Hanoi, I see a lot of history—a mix of old architecture, messy street signs, and a lot of life. It’s not a "neat" city, but it has a wonderful soul. That’s what I wanted for this typeface. I wanted it to have that sense of history you get from a serif, but with the friendly, slightly mismatched energy of the streets I walk every day. I think those little shortcomings are what make things more human. We all have our own little defects, and that’s usually why our friends love us. I hope that’s why you might like Tonkin, too. Casual Elegance I think there’s a big difference between something being elegant and something being "luxury." Luxury often feels like it's trying to exclude people. Tonkin isn't trying to be expensive; it’s just trying to be nice. I’d call it "casual elegance." It’s like wearing a nice linen shirt but leaving the top button undone. It’s for when you want to look your best but still want to be approachable. It’s not meant for a super-serious legal document, but it’s perfect for places where people are being kind to each other—a local café menu, a small brand that cares about its community, or a personal project where you want the reader to feel like they’re being spoken to by a real person. What’s Included? I wanted to make sure Tonkin was actually useful for your projects. I ended up making 8 different weights. I also made a condensed version for every single weight, giving you 16 styles in total. Since I love languages, I wanted Tonkin to speak to as many people as possible. It supports Latin (with a lot of care put into the Vietnamese accents) and Cyrillic. In the pictures I’ve shared, you can see some "pink" letters—those are just some alternative versions I made so you can change the mood of a word here or there. Who is Tonkin for? If you are looking for a font that is mathematically flawless, Tonkin might not be for you. But if you want something warm, honest, and friendly, I think you and Tonkin will get along quite well. I’ve been working on this for a long time. Some days it felt right, and other days I felt like I was just moving lines around. But seeing it now, I’m happy with it. It represents where I am on my journey. If you decide to use Tonkin, thank you—it helps me keep learning and making nice things.

Über Hanoi Cartel

Hanoi Cartel is a type foundry based in Hanoi, Vietnam, dedicated to crafting soulful and culturally resonant typefaces. The foundry places a strong emphasis on extensive language support, aims to make its typefaces accessible and versatile for diverse linguistic needs.Deeply rooted in Vietnam’s visual history, Hanoi Cartel draws inspiration from two opposite yet influential design traditions of Vietnamese typography in the 20th century: The bold, assertive lettering styles of Vietnamese communist-era propaganda posters , which is very well-known for their powerful visual impact and ideological clarity. The intricate, handcrafted lettering of advertising boards in southern Vietnam before 1975, which reflect a more commercial, artisanal aesthetic with very creative solution for diacritics. By appreciating these visual legacies, we strive to create typefaces that are not only functional but also rich in narrative and cultural depth.
