À propos de la famille

Backwash AOE originates from the Astigmatic Institute’s Urban Lettering Archive, a collection devoted to the expressive typography found along North America’s freight rail corridors. The letterforms capture the sharp angles, exaggerated counters, and spontaneous motion characteristic of graffiti painted onto moving railcars. Each character leans, twists, and stretches with the improvisational energy of street lettering created quickly and boldly on steel surfaces rushing through industrial landscapes. The shapes balance chunky silhouettes with playful asymmetry, giving words a dynamic rhythm that feels both rebellious and rhythmic. Backwash is ideal for streetwear branding, hip-hop graphics, urban posters, skate culture design, album art, and bold display headlines where personality and attitude are essential. The uppercase set reflects classic freight graffiti proportions, while the lowercase introduces a looser conversational style reminiscent of tags and street signatures. Preserved by the Institute as a study in vernacular lettering, Backwash AOE celebrates the typographic culture born in motion—letterforms shaped by rail lines, city walls, and the unfiltered creativity of the street.

À propos Astigmatic

In 1873, the strange and fantastic story began. Nearly two centuries later, Brian J. Bonislawsky was born, and carrying on a mix of the the footsteps his ancestors before him took, he picked up the the traditions and founded the Astigmatic One Eye Foundry, which later expanded to become the Astigmatic One Eye Typographic Institute. (For more of the background story, see the Historical Perspective link below.) Since its founding Astigmatic has worked with dozens of designers, helping them forge their own foundries as well as helping to increase the quality of type created by Astigmatic and these other foundries. Astigmatic strives to continually increase its range of typographic scope; taking on expeditions to revive old typestyles, unearth long lost typefaces, forge new styles yet unseen, and begin to develop more comprehensive language typestyles of the WGL4 set size which includes Greek and Cyrillic extensions. If you are looking for a wide variety of typographic influence and style, the Astigmatic One Eye Institute is your source for type.
