À propos de la famille

Old-fashioned packaging is easy to overdo. Victorian ornament can become theatrical, rustic lettering can turn folksy, and elegant calligraphy often feels too polished. Hedgerow offers another route: the crunchy character of small-print calligraphy enlarged for display.

Its starting point was the peculiar interlocking lettering in the liner notes of Led Zeppelin IV, broadened through Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau calligraphy. Hedgerow keeps the compact, upright quality of lettering intended for smaller print; enlarged, its narrow capitals, soft irregularities, and interlocking ligatures become a distinctive display texture.

That makes it especially useful for products that need historical character without the usual engraved-label formula. Tea tins, preserves, botanical toiletries, garden fragrances, herb preparations, seed oils, traditional confectionery, specialty foods, and similar goods can use Hedgerow for product names, varieties, flavors, and short promotional lines. With brighter color and friendly illustration it can look quaint or even cute; darker imagery can reveal the stranger side suggested by its Led Zeppelin origins.

Hedgerow also fits historical photography and archival design unusually well. Daguerreotype annotations, cabinet-card captions, genealogy publications, museum graphics, documentary titles, historical photo collections, and period-drama ephemera benefit from lettering that feels like a label or handwritten note from an old printed object rather than a grand historical headline.

Its old seed-catalogue flavor makes horticultural work another natural fit: cultivar names, seed packets, nursery materials, gardening products, greenhouse supplies, and botanical headings all suit its dense calligraphic forms. Hedgerow can sit comfortably beside botanical engraving, faded photography, or contemporary illustration while avoiding a generic rustic look.

Hedgerow is an all-caps display face best suited to concentrated roles such as package fronts, titles, headings, labels, annotations, and short copy. At larger sizes, the ligatures and compact calligraphic forms reveal the texture that gives the typeface its peculiar mix of old-fashioned charm and mild strangeness.
