Amoral is the second recut. Cleaner letterforms, better rhythm, reconsidered balance — but the expressive numerals and the quiet strangeness of the original are still here. That's the whole point. For headlines, posters, book jackets, album covers, and anything that should feel like it arrived from somewhere. This typeface has been traveling for over 130 years. It started as Armoral — a display face issued by Ciniatti Type Foundry in 1888. By the turn of the century, it had crossed the Atlantic and entered the catalogue of an early 20th-century Hungarian printing house, listed simply as Excelsior. It was from this Hungarian source that the designer recut it, named it Iskola in 2002, and released it through T-26 — sending it back to America without knowing where it had originally come from. The origin only surfaced later, when the 1888 Cincinnati specimen turned up.

Sobre Monovo

Monovo is the innovative type universe crafted by Amondó Szegi, a distinguished type designer and educator at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) in Budapest. As the founder of Fontanatype, Hungary's first internationally recognized digital type foundry established in 1999, Szegi brings over 25 years of expertise to the field. His typefaces have gained prominence through T-26, where several designs reached bestseller status, alongside P22/IHOF and The Type Foundry. Licensed by Canva, his work continues to enhance editorial design, brand identity, and cultural projects globally. Fontanatype uniquely bridges historical references with contemporary practices, translating rhythm, structure, and typographic intelligence into functional type systems that respect tradition while innovating. Monovo builds upon this legacy with a conceptual focus, embodying the belief that letterforms are dynamic tools of communication—shaped by history, culture, and practical application, from editorial text to expressive design. Drawing inspiration from the rich lineage of typographic forms and the intentional challenge of rule-breaking, Monovo produces flat, iconic, and versatile typefaces that convey clarity, warmth, and purpose. Through Monovo, Szegi delves into appropriation, revival, and reinterpretation, treating letters as conceptual ready-made objects while broadening the creative horizons of type in contemporary design.
