Bauhold is a contemporary sans-serif typeface that merges Bauhaus and Jan Tschichold, explicitly acknowledging the modernist legacy of experimentation, reduction, and functional clarity. It serves as a tribute to the early twentieth-century quest for a universal visual language, echoing Tschichold’s investigations into structure, proportion, and the concept of a universal alphabet adapted to modern life. The design of Bauhold is grounded in clear geometric principles. Circular forms, straight strokes, and disciplined proportions establish a rational framework that recalls Bauhaus typography and early modernist systems. Simultaneously, Bauhold avoids rigidity through carefully considered deviations. Characters such as n, m, h, u, and g subtly depart from strict geometric construction, introducing a human rhythm that softens the texture of text while preserving clarity and legibility. A defining feature of Bauhold is the OVER axis, inspired by the concept of overture and formal transformation. This axis progressively reshapes circular forms into near-rectangular structures, opening the counters of the letters and increasing internal space. As the axis is engaged, the typeface transitions from closed, compact forms to more open and angular ones, effectively generating two distinct stylistic expressions within the same family. This transformation not only alters the visual character of the typeface but also influences readability and tone. The closed forms offer a dense, controlled appearance suitable for text-heavy compositions, while the open forms create a more expressive, contemporary voice ideal for display and interface use. Across both extremes, Bauhold maintains a consistent typographic color and balance. Bauhold is equipped with an extensive set of OpenType features, including true small caps, ligatures, stylistic alternates, and multiple numeral systems. With its wide range of weights and variable axes, it adapts seamlessly to editorial design, branding, wayfinding, and digital environments. Rooted in modernist theory yet refined for contemporary practice, Bauhold bridges historical experimentation and functional typography with clarity, flexibility, and intent.

Acerca de Tipo Pèpel

Located in a small town, Les Borges Blanques, Spain, Tipo Pèpel is a digital type foundry run by Josep Patau. The self-taught designer began producing experimental typefaces in 1996 and started selling them through MyFonts in 2011. His debut font, Anduaga, was a revival from Joseph de Anduaga y Garimberti, the XVII´s famous spanish calligrapher. Since then, his library had expanded to include nearly two dozen font families, each of which is unique and reflects the small country town he comes from with a familiar rural feel. Some of Josep’s best selling typefaces, including Pobla, Bridone, and Cinta, really demonstrate the impact his home has on his designs, while Boxed, a semi-modular geometric font, is a step outside of this theme. “All of my projects excite me and I put my best into each of them, doing everything with my own two hands,” Josep says. “I treat them all like my children.” With a focus on the details and creating high quality drawings, each of his fonts offers an extended character map that is fully capable with OpenType features. He also diligently insures that each of his typefaces is legible in all sizes. “I think that this is one of my goals because I always begin my designs by thinking about the final use if the font,” he says. “I worry about this a lot, so I do thousands of tests before launching the final font to ensure high quality standards and full satisfaction for final users.”
