Sobre la familia

As a former career lettering artist and font developer in the greeting card industry, I generated many lettering style sketches for projects. Empathy Script is based on one never used that I was drawn to revisit. Always a struggle to put a name to a font design. In this case, I just pulled a word that I felt needed to be heard and expressed more often.

Empathy Script moves with an enticing rhythm while maintaining the clear legibility needed for branding, headlines, and packaging. Beginning, ending, and alternate letters are all there. What this doesn’t have is cut and paste flourishes that all look the same. Using alternate “contextual” glyphs or letters, I try to create a more realistic sense of how a calligrapher or lettering artist would render a line of text. In natural writing and more fluid calligraphy, there are various types of connections as well as pen or brush lifts in a line of text.

Having plenty of contextual substitution and ligatures included makes settings in design applications full of life. There are more than 650 glyphs in each weight and style with sophisticated feature code making Empathy Script a “pro” level font. With six styles, Empathy Script should be perfect for many projects.
