Sobre la familia Gotham Fuente

Todos los diseñadores han admirado alguna vez las letras sencillas del lenguaje vernáculo estadounidense, esas letras de pintura, yeso, neón, cristal y acero que ocupan un lugar tan destacado en el paisaje urbano. De estos humildes orígenes surgió Gotham, un tipo de letra muy trabajador para la posteridad.

El tipo de letra Gotham fue diseñado por Jonathan Hoefler y Tobias Frere-Jones en 2000. Gotham, una fuente sin gracias que comparte muchos atributos del género "geométrico" de la tipografía, se inspiró en un estilo de letras mayúsculas atrevidas que evolucionó fuera de la tradición tipográfica a principios del siglo XX, común en carteles litografiados, letreros esmaltados y fachadas comerciales de toda la ciudad de Nueva York. Aparecida por primera vez en las páginas de la revista GQ en 2001, Gotham acaparó la atención internacional en 2007, cuando fue adoptada por la campaña presidencial de Barack Obama. Gotham, uno de los tipos de letra más populares e influyentes de nuestro tiempo, forma parte de la colección permanente del Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York.

Gotham rinde homenaje a las atractivas y discretas letras de la ciudad. Nueva York está repleta de este tipo de letras, letras sin gracias hechas a mano que comparten una estructura subyacente común, una idea de ingeniería de "letra básica" que trasciende tanto las características de sus materiales como los manierismos de sus creadores. Son los números de bronce fundido que dan autoridad a los portales de las oficinas y las marcas de las piedras angulares, cuyo estilo neutro y ecuánime desafía el paso del tiempo. Son los letreros de neón que adornan licorerías y farmacias, y los nombres de los propietarios pintados en los camiones de reparto. Son letras sencillas e innegociables, pero con una gran personalidad y, a menudo, fabricadas por expertos. Y aunque los diseñadores han convivido con ellas durante más de medio siglo, sorprendentemente no se recuperaron hasta el año 2000, cuando presentamos Gotham.

Gotham es uno de esos raros diseños, el nuevo tipo de letra que resulta familiar. De la tipografía que la inspiró, Gotham ha heredado un tono honesto, asertivo pero nunca imponente, amistoso pero nunca campechano, confiado pero nunca distante. La inclusión de tantos ingredientes originales sin precedentes históricos - minúsculas, cursiva, una amplia gama de pesos y anchos, y un conjunto de caracteres que trasciende el alfabeto latino - realza la sencillez de estas formas con una sofisticación bienvenida, y aporta una amplia gama de voces expresivas a la familia Gotham.

Cuatro anchuras

Los diseñadores nos preguntaron si Gotham podía asumir nuevas funciones tipográficas, y les escuchamos. Gotham Narrow reimagina Gotham como una fuente de texto que ocupa poco espacio, que se adapta perfectamente a los confines de la columna de texto estrecha sin parecer apretada. Con la silueta de una serie clásica de titulares, Gotham Extra Narrow es una opción práctica para tamaños tanto grandes como pequeños, con un amplio juego de caracteres que la recomienda para entornos con mucha información. Gotham Condensed presenta nueve pesos, desde Thin hasta Ultra, e incluye una serie de características poco habituales en las condensadas fuentes, empezando por cursivas a juego en todos los pesos.
