Suhas Devanagari is a single weight display typeface developed exclusively for the Devanagari script. At first glance, the design’s most prominent feature is surely the stroke’s rounded terminals. These give texts set in Suhas Devanagari a soft and friendly feeling. The characters in the typeface are bold, but that term applies more to the thicknesses of the individual strokes rather than the impression the font gives to the reader, which is not as ‘loud’ as the word bold might imply. Aside from the typeface’s weight and its rounded terminals, close inspection of Suhas Devanagari reveals an anatomy that is well-grounded in the structure you would expect from a ‘sans serif’ Devanagari typeface intended for mass communication. Suhas Devanagari works well for short texts in advertising and corporate communications contexts. It makes an excellent addition to a sophisticated brand design system. Despite its stroke weight, the typeface’s counterforms remain open and clear, allowing for text set in the font to be legible and enjoyably readable, too. Suhas Devanagari was designed in-house at ITF by Aasawari Kulkarni.
