Reckham is a mutant Scotch Roman. We wanted to draw a Century Expanded that turned Clarendon when it got bolder, but somewhere along the way the serifs came unbracketed and our ideals of clarity and rigor had to make room for a few eccentric details. Six weights, four degrees of contrast, and matching italics add up to 48 styles. The full Reckham family includes variable roman and italic fonts, so users can fine-tune weight and contrast to suit themselves.
Field Gothic is an eight-weight, eight-width, possibly-too-personal journey through the history of American and European sanses that may or may not parallel our own journey from New York City to Dublin. Overall, the look is crisp and on the cool side, with slightly superelliptical curves. The lightest weights are almost monoline. Above that, arches and bowls have sharply contrasting junctures and a notably snug fit.
Dashiell was made to be read. Designed by a devoted reader with lousy eyesight, it’s an attempt to combine the warmth and frankness of Caslon with the lucid elegance of Garamond. Counters and x-height are ample but not large. Apertures are moderately open, and unbracketed wedge serifs add crispness. The collection includes three families: Dashiell Text, Dashiell Bright, and Dashiell Fine, for a total of 31 styles.

Signal Type Foundry
“I grew up bookish in a house full of books, and it got me interested in those rows of little black marks books are made of. I did my first paid lettering job at fifteen. When I became a graphic designer, I began to study letters seriously and found that the best of them had a particular kind of beauty: the beauty of tools, airplanes, and bridges, of something rigorously shaped for a particular use. I found I wanted to draw more letters like that, so that the things I designed could be made of the very best stuff. And that’s what Signal tries to provide to designers.”
Max Phillips founded Signal in New York City in 2011 after 20-odd years of type-focused branding work and moved it to Dublin when his Irish wife got homesick. We provide custom type design, logo development, typographic consulting, and a retail type library, much of it with a focus on branding, but with occasional longing looks backward at the world of books.
