About the family

AlSawsan is a contemporary Arabic display typeface that bridges the fluidity of classical calligraphy with the restraint of modern design. The name Sawsan — meaning lily in Arabic — is also a traditional Arabic feminine name, continuing designer Eisa AlEisa's series of Arabic display typefaces
The defining characteristic of AlSawsan is its calligraphic-monolinear approach: the letterforms follow the natural movement of a hand holding a pen, with free-flowing curves and organic rhythm, but without the thick-thin stroke contrast of traditional calligraphy. The result is a typeface that feels handwritten yet refined , expressive without being decorative.

The design draws its strongest identity from letters with wide open counters and generous curves: ح (ha), ج (jeem), and ع (ain) serve as the typographic anchors of the alphabet, establishing the spatial generosity that defines the entire family. Every other letterform was designed to maintain this same balance between ink and white space.

Design Uses

AlSawsan is built for display and headline use. It excels in brand identity for luxury, lifestyle, beauty, and cultural products , particularly where an Arabic name or phrase needs to carry both elegance and authenticity. It pairs naturally with clean sans-serif Latin companions for bilingual branding, editorial spreads, packaging, and signage.

Character Set & Features

The typeface supports the full Arabic script with all four positional forms (isolated, initial, medial, final), complete vowel marks (harakat) with accurate GPOS anchor positioning, lam-alef ligatures, and Arabic-Indic numerals. A Latin companion character set is included. OpenType features include ccmp, init, medi, fina, rlig, liga, mark, mkmk, and kern — ensuring correct shaping across all major Arabic text rendering environments including web browsers, Adobe applications, and mobile platforms.

About Eisa AlEisa

Eisa AlEisa is an independent type foundry from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia , the studio of artist and type designer Eisa AlEisa. Most releases begins as an ink drawing on paper: letterforms shaped by hand long before they become digital curves, which gives the work a warmth and rhythm rooted in the visual culture of the Gulf. The foundry focuses on original Arabic type , contemporary designs with real personality, careful joins, deep bowls, and stems cut with a single confident chamfer. Each typeface is drawn to hold its character at display sizes and stay readable in text. The last release, Aljawhara, takes its name from the Arabic word for "the jewel."
