About the family

Forest Haven is a distinctive contemporary style of hand lettering. I developed this style while working on a Cure for Cancer greeting card project back in 2009. The forms exhibit pressure weight much like pointed pen script, only very heavy, especially towards the bottom end. It is very expressive lettering, especially when combined with more traditional typesetting. Use it boldly, it’s not a shy style. The embellished letters can give your design a sensual hand lettered feel. The letters in Forest Haven were originally handwritten rather than constructed on some grid. This is reflected in the way the letter connections work. I find that mix of connected and unconnected in a hand lettered script adds breath to the design. It takes away that sense of grid-based mechanics that so many scripts rely on. Every script font I design tends to have not only loads of alternate letters, but well thought out contextual settings. This allows users to get great typesetting straight up that can then be supplemented with letters that make more of a statement. In apps like Illustrator and InDesign, Forest Haven will add contextual ligatures, standard ligatures, and key contextual alternates automatically as you type. The feature code settings are dependable and yet flexible. The Sentiments version is designed to use as components with regular text fonts for cards, invitations, thank you notes and so forth. Some of the words can be combined such as “Happy” followed by “Birthday”, “Valentine’s Day”, or “Anniversary.” Most of these words can be constructed from the larger Forest Haven font, though some words have uniquely tweaked letters.
