About the family

Some machines have to meet the public.

A service robot crossing a hotel lobby, a parcel locker outside an apartment building or a check-in terminal at an airport cannot look like factory equipment. But pushing too far toward friendly rounded typography can make substantial hardware look toy-like. Headlight occupies the useful territory between those extremes.

Its mechanically squared, superelliptical forms give the letters an engineered foundation, while softened terminals and humanist stroke modulation take the severity out of the geometry. The result feels manufactured without becoming militarized, and approachable without becoming cute.

Service robots are a particularly natural application. Hotel delivery robots, restaurant serving robots, cleaning machines, retail assistants and campus delivery fleets need names and identities that acknowledge what they are without making them seem ominous. Headlight can handle robot names, model families, body decals, docking-station graphics and exhibition displays while a plainer companion takes care of diagnostics and dense interface information.

Self-service equipment presents much the same problem. Parcel lockers, hotel check-in terminals, ticket machines, smart vending systems, automated pickup cabinets and parking-payment kiosks combine rigid industrial housings with a point of human interaction. Headlight gives product names, service names, enclosure graphics and instructional headings a technical character that remains civil and accessible.

Public charging and shared-mobility systems extend that role outdoors. EV chargers, bicycle and scooter docks, battery-swap stations and mobility terminals are pieces of infrastructure that also function as consumer products. Building-access systems such as smart intercoms, visitor kiosks, parcel-room terminals and elevator destination systems face the same challenge: they must belong to engineered hardware while remaining comfortable in everyday public spaces.

The same balance works for domestic automation such as robot vacuums, automated lawn equipment and smart pet devices. Headlight is a rounded technical sans for machines people actually have to deal with; its squareness establishes the equipment, while its softened construction makes the introduction.
